Rescue Me ID: 14-10-14-00257Sparta (female)

German Shepherd Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Not Good w/ Other Dogs, Not Good w/ Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: High Energy, Submissive
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Sparta is a sweet and energetic 2 yo. Mom was English bull terrier and Dad was a police trained German shepherd. She's great with kids and has been to obedience school. So she's house-broken and leash trained. She provides a great home security system as well as a loving companion. She has an impressive bark that will deter anyone not welcome to your home, but she also has some if the sweetest and funniest vocalizations that she saves for us. We have to find Sparta a new home, unfortunately because she tries to dominate other dogs, particularly females and smaller dogs. She needs to be an only dog, preferably and this has been our ... (Read More)biggest issue. Please help! She will be euthanized no later than Friday, Oct. 17 if i can not find a suitable home, and that would be terrible because she truly is one-of-a-kind and LOVES people. German Shepherd Mix    Age: Young Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Very Submissive

We had a female puppey show up today. She is very energetic and sweet. She is short haired and looks almost like a German Shephard. I'd say she is somewhere around 7 months old and is a little taller than our 4 year old Basset Hound / Weiner dog mix so she may be a medium-sized to larger breed dog fully grown. I tried to upload a photo but the photo editor doesn't seem to work. I can email or text a picture. We are located in Hueytown, Al.

Animal ID: Lorenzo  (male)

German Shepherd Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: High Energy, Very Submissive
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Lorenzo is a sweet and goofy boy who was abandoned by a family who split from their rental house. The landlord brought him to us as he deserves a second chance. He is about 3 1/2 years old, heartworm negative and quite healthy. Lorenzo is calm and polite in his kennel and just loves to get out for walks. He bounces around a bit on the leash at first as he has so much energy build up from being caged. This dog would do so much better as a running partner, in a big fenced yard or on a lot of acreage as he really needs to stretch his legs more than we can allow him to do in the shelter. Please consider adding this loveable guy to your ... (Read More)family. (Less)

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults

 Abused/Neglected, Fearful/Anxious

marsha came from a high kill shelter in Northeast AL. She is a shy girl but will let you pet her and talk to her. It appears she has been severely abused because of the way she will roll onto her back when approached. With the right handler and time, patience and lots of TLC, Marsha will make a great companion. She tested very light positive for HW and has just completed her treatments. She will be retested for HW and if God willing, she will be negative. I will only adopt to a quiet household with no more than two dogs.

I wish I wasn't here having to do this..But I truly need to find my faithful friend a home..Although she is getting gray around her muzzle she is still as cute and beautiful as she was when she was a puppy..she has a Shepard personality with a mastiff body.she is an Excellent watch dog.And It's my fault she isn't real people friendly as it's always been just her and I in the country..There is sum people she'll take right to..(like the gal at the vet the last time I had to board her) and sum she wants nothing to do with..she's about 125 lbs and thinks she can crawl in ur lap..She has been pretty much a house dog..Wasn't when she was young but ... (Read More)now she is scared to death of thunder/gun shots/fireworks etc..so she is inside when anything is going on..She is addicted to frisbees (just cant throw them high as she has the long mastiff body, (twisted once jumping for it and hurt herself)..and she loves her kitty pool..I just want sumone to love her as much as I do and take care of her..She's smart as a whip and understands everything I say..and I know she can feel my anxiety now as she stays with me almost constant..I am moving the end of Oct, and if I can't find sumone to give her a home I'll have to put her down peacefully never thinking I deserted her..     This is one of the favorites of the staff and volunteers due to her wonder disposition and loving nature. She is offered at a special price of $50. Turned in because owners 'couldn't afford'. Please read completely: FOR INFORMATION ON THIS ANIMAL PLEASE CONTACT 256-883-3783. BE SURE TO HAVE ID# READY. Animals at this shelter are held a reasonable amount of time so at the time of posting it is adoptable and not in immediate danger. However, the time period is limited depending upon the shelter population. Please note: THE SHELTER IS FULL. If you are interested in fostering, the need is great and we would love to have you. If you are ... (Read More)interested in adopting me: 1) Write down my Animal ID # . 2) Make sure to mention Animal ID # when visiting or calling. 3) Remember all adoptions stop 30 minutes prior to closing time. 3) You will not be allowed to place a hold on me. 4) I cannot be shipped to you. 5) Before adopting me, you can spend time with me outside or in a meet and greet room. Please ask for assistance. 6) We take cash, checks, debit cards, VISA and Mastercard as a method of payment. **IMPORTANT: Huntsville Animal Services cannot guarantee that I will still be available for adoption as we do not hold animals for anyone under any circumstances. Animals are adopted on a first come, first serve basis. You may want to call and ask if I am still available prior to visiting the shelter. When you adopt me, I will stay at the shelter and be taken to the veterinarian of your choice where I will be spayed or neutered before going to my new home. If I am already spayed or neutered, I can go home with you upon adoption. My adoption cost is very affordable and includes my adoption fee, spay/neuter, vaccinations, deworming, license (if you live within Huntsville city limits), a collar and personalized ID tag. Please know that a high percentage of animals in the shelter are brought in as strays. It is impossible to know anything about a stray animal and many times we can only make our best educated guess on breeds, age, etc. Every animal you see posted here has passed a general temperament test as performed by shelter staff and it is considered to be non-aggressive. ADOPTION FEES Dogs: $80 - 170 - includes spay/neuter surgery, vaccinations, rabies voucher, deworming, *heart worm and flea/tick prevention; purebred dogs and puppies tend to cost more and dogs that have been in the shelter longer will probably cost less. Cats: The shelter is currently running a $35 special on cats. (regularly $80) - includes spay/neuter surgery, vaccinations, feline aids/leukemia testing, rabies voucher, deworming, *heart worm and flea/tick prevention LICENSE FEES $10 - 1 year license $35 - Lifetime license EVERY ADOPTER RESIDING IN THE CITY OF HUNTSVILLE, AL WILL BE REQUIRED TO PURCHASE ONE OF THE ABOVE LICENSE OPTIONS AT TIME OF ADOPTION OPTIONAL SERVICES $10 - Heartworm test. Blood test known as the 'snap test' that shows when heart worm antigens are present in the blood. $20 - Microchip. Another line of defense to help you get your pet back in the event he/she is lost. This is especially recommended for those pets known to climb fences, chew collars/tags, etc. Start your new pup out right by gentle training and socialization. If you confront a behavior problem you are not sure what to do about, Laurel Rose is a dog trainer in Huntsville who has offered to meet with people who adopt dogs from the Huntsville Animal Shelter for a free evaluation. Phone is: (256) 890-1234. Labrador Retrievers One of the most popular breeds all around, we have documented Labradors elsewhere as the best dog to have if you're looking for a date, the only breed accepted for training as arson dogs, and one of the more popular breeds for service dogs. For a family, there's hardly a better choice. Labradors love to please their humans, being playful, protective, loving, and reliable. There's nothing that a Lab loves more than to show off by learning a new trick, even if they manage to learn that new trick before you've taught it to them. They are canine 'Einsteins'. (Less)

This is my beautiful German Shepherd, 'Arin'. When I graduated college I was forced to send him to live with my parents due to my work situation (75%+ travel). He is a super smart dog who loves nothing more in life than chasing his frisbee. Unfortunately, his high intelligence leads him to find ever more clever ways of escaping from the yard. My parents are at the end of their patience and have given me until this weekend (8/30) to find a new home for him. I am out of the state, and out of options... Rescue Me ID: 14-03-12-00250Dexter (male)

German Shepherd Mix    Age: Young Adult

Dexter is a 4 year old Heinz 57 (maybe some shepered/ mastiff in there?). He spent his life in isolation and filth on a heavy chain with virtually no contact. He gets along with everyone but is lacking a bit in the manners department (he is SOOOOOO excited to see everyone). Because of his life of isolation prior to coming to ABRA, Dexters favorite toy was a large piece of broken asphalt, we have been able to substitute that down to a smaller concrete paver to keep him from ruining his teeth, but it is virtually the only toy he takes much interest in.
