First of all, the American Pit bull is different from other bull dog breeds and yet they are typically lumped together. Many are actually American bulldogs, American Staffordshire terriers, boxer mixes, etc. And what percentage of pit bull traits gets a dog declared to be pit bull over whatever other breed he might be mixed with? But more importantly, the pit bull is more typically sweet natured and friendly when trained and socialized correctly. Please do not be turned off if a dog that appeals to you is labeled 'pit bull mix'. Come meet it. You will probably be pleasantly surprised and may consider adopting one of the most difficult dogs to find a home for, due to no fault of its own. Pit mixes are typically strong and focused and will require regular exercise. A 'power breed waiver' may be required stating that you acknowledge that this dog will be strong and/or large and may need appropriate training and handling. (Less)

Luke was found wandering the streets on a backwoods country road in Rural Alabama with a broken mangled front leg. Because the owners could not afford to get the help Luke needed, they agreed to let us take him and take care of his every need. Luckily for Luke,he was HW negative.     A spotted tongue is sometimes an indication that there is Chow in the breed mix but this looks very much like a beautiful German Shepherd. Unfortunately, she is heartworm positive which means that if someone wanted to save her life and were to commit to her care, they would need to also commit to the fees for medical treatment. Please ask for assistance. 6) We take cash, checks, debit cards, VISA and Mastercard as a method of payment. **IMPORTANT: Huntsville Animal Services cannot guarantee that I will still be available for adoption as we do not hold animals for anyone under any circumstances. Animals are adopted on a first come, first serve basis. You may want to call and ask if I am still available prior to visiting the shelter. When you adopt me, I will stay at the shelter and be taken to the veterinarian of your choice where I will be spayed or neutered before going to my new home. If I am already spayed or neutered, I can go home with you upon adoption. My adoption cost is very affordable and includes my adoption fee, spay/neuter, vaccinations, deworming, license (if you live within Huntsville city limits), a collar and personalized ID tag. Please know that a high percentage of animals in the shelter are brought in as strays. It is impossible to know anything about a stray animal and many times we can only make our best educated guess on breeds, age, etc. Every animal you see posted here has passed a general temperament test as performed by shelter staff and it is considered to be non-aggressive. ADOPTION FEES Dogs: $80 - 170 - includes spay/neuter surgery, vaccinations, rabies voucher, deworming, *heart worm and flea/tick prevention; purebred dogs and puppies tend to cost more and dogs that have been in the shelter longer will probably cost less. Cats: The shelter is currently running a $35 special on cats. (regularly $80) - includes spay/neuter surgery, vaccinations, feline aids/leukemia testing, rabies voucher, deworming, *heart worm and flea/tick prevention LICENSE FEES $10 - 1 year license $35 - Lifetime license EVERY ADOPTER RESIDING IN THE CITY OF HUNTSVILLE, AL WILL BE REQUIRED TO PURCHASE ONE OF THE ABOVE LICENSE OPTIONS AT TIME OF ADOPTION OPTIONAL SERVICES $10 - Heartworm test. Blood test known as the 'snap test' that shows when heart worm antigens are present in the blood. $20 - Microchip. Another line of defense to help you get your pet back in the event he/she is lost. This is especially recommended for those pets known to climb fences, chew collars/tags, etc. (Less)

Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Rocky is such a gentle giant. He is very laid back and just wants to cuddle. He loves kids, people and other dogs. He is currently going through a fast kill treatment for heartworms but this will not interfere with his being adopted or having a long healthy life. He is neutered and UTD on vaccs and can't wait to meet his new family. This is what his foster had to say about him... If you have ever had the privilege of spending time with a black mouth cur, then you know how awesome Rocky is! Not only that, but he has some German Shepherd mixed in too, so he has great genes to go around. Rocky is one year old, weighs 70 pounds, and like all ... (Read More)curs, is super laid back - as you can see from his pictures. He is house trained and neutered. Rocky does well with dogs and kids. He hasn't been around cats, but most curs do fine with cats, though a coordinated introduction is highly recommended with any cat/dog introduction. (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 14-03-12-00250Dexter (male)

German Shepherd Mix    Age: Young Adult

Dexter is a 4 year old Heinz 57 (maybe some shepered/ mastiff in there?). He spent his life in isolation and filth on a heavy chain with virtually no contact. He gets along with everyone but is lacking a bit in the manners department (he is SOOOOOO excited to see everyone). Because of his life of isolation prior to coming to ABRA, Dexters favorite toy was a large piece of broken asphalt, we have been able to substitute that down to a smaller concrete paver to keep him from ruining his teeth, but it is virtually the only toy he takes much interest in. He bats it around his kennel and tosses it in the air like most dogs do a ball. Dexter would ... (Read More)love to find the family that he has missed out on all these years. (Less)

You wouldn't think lovely Lester would share many similarities with the early 20th century American gangster Baby Face Nelson, but in fact laughing Lester shares two, as Baby Face was also born with the likable name Lester, and OUR Lester is the sweetest big baby with baby-face looks of his own east of the Mississippi. And can you believe Lester is 5 whole years old and has been at Second Chance Shelter in Boaz for many of those years?
