Rescue Me ID: 14-12-20-00389SPIRO (male)

German Shepherd    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

SPIRO was saved from BARC shelter and was in a much worse state than the shelter had said. He was taken immediately to Leon Valley Vet Clinic where Dr. Meier determined him to be extremely anemic, dehydrated, severe demodex and skin infections. He couldn't stand up and was immediately put on IV fluids and anti-biotic. Since being home with the pack, SPIRO has made amazing progress and as you can see from the photo his hair has almost all grown back, he is eating, he is running and playing with the other pups and to look at him you would never know how close to a miserable, painful death he was. SPIRO is feeling great and is ready for his ... (Read More)new forever family to find him and take him into their hearts and homes. SPIRO is a typical puppy, he runs, he plays, he barks and is just all puppy. Which considering what he has been through is so heartwarming. Although located in Texas we are using Rescue Road Trips LLC., a highly reputable animal rescue transport company to re-locate our dogs from rescue to meet their families along the East Coast (This allows us to save more dogs from the high rate kill shelters here in Texas). This is a private company and their transport fee (which is paid directly to them) is $185 per dog. This fee is in addition to what you would pay the rescue for the adoption fee. SPIRO is available for adoption through Give a Dog a Home, German Shepherd Dog Rescue for an adoption fee of $350. Or application can be found on the website under the application tab.     As with any training program, even animal rescue, you occasionally run into an individual that is extremely smart, very capable but insist on becoming the memorable class clown. In our case this class clown is our very own Eve, knockout gorgeous, super intelligent female, 12-18 month old, silver and black long haired, German shepherd.     One of the very special things about animal rescue is the opportunity that you receive to meet animals that have all of the reasons to give up but instead chose not only to survive but excel. A case in point is one of our new graduates, a five month old female German shepherd named Katy. This girl came to us totally hairless, malnourished, weeping sores, parasite infested and totally committed to kicking the hell out of her past life. Ms. Katy got this name because she reminds me of a young lady I know that has also made a decision to face life with this same determination and grit.     Please welcome Mr. Ernie to the ranks of the new graduates from our rehabilitation, socialization and training programs. Ernie is a coal black, male, German shepherd, about 18 months in age and that is now 64 pounds but will probably attain a weight of between 70 and 75 pounds. Our boy is very sweet, totally enamored with people of all ages but seems to excel with children. Ernie also does well with other dogs showing openness to approach, common respect and a confident presence. During our training sessions we found Ernie to be alert, focused, extremely intelligent and always willing to work. Probably one of the most endearing attributes of ... German Shepherd Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Not Good w/ Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

5 y/o Shepard Mix in need of a good home. Very playful and affectionate! Loves runs/walks/hikes/fetch. House trained, does not have 'accidents' inside. Does not like cats, or getting his nails trimmed. I adopted him in Dec. 2012 (at the age of 3), since then my work schedule has changed dramatically and it does not allow me to spend the time with him that he deserves. He is a great family dog, has always been great with small children and family friends. Loves to roll over and be pet. Very well behaved! Is very healthy and strong, he does not take any medications. I clean his ears once a week to prevent wax build up, he does not mind his ... (Read More)ears being cleaned... he's tolerates it for a little snack :-) He is neutered and microchipped. He loves to lay down inside on his doggy bed, while chewing a Nylabone. He will typically go into his crate at night, when he is tired and ready for bed. He is a great, fun and loving dog that deserves a family! Please message me with any questions or photo requests. (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 14-12-15-00111GISELE (female)

German Shepherd Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Meet pretty GISELE, a blue eyed, brown eyed, shepherd mix that was saved from BARC Animal Shelter in Houston, TX. She was noted as an owner surrender, but no reason given. GISELE is very sweet and gentle, she is very loving and quite playful, she acts and looks younger than the 3 years that she has been aged at. GISELE is well mannered, although when she gets excited she does jump up a little. At the rescue I free-feed and she does growl a little at other dogs if any of them come near her whilst she is at the food bowl, but I would not consider her to be aggressive, but if other dogs are in the home, she might need to be observed initially ... (Read More)during meal times. GISELE, as all rescue dogs would benefit from some obedience training with her new family so that she can learn her boundaries and what is expected from her, and her new family can learn her body language and what makes her tick. GISELE has been aged at 3 years old (December 2011), she is spayed, rabies, up to date on her vaccines, de-wormed, tested negative for heartworm disease and is mirco-chipped. She currently weighs around 40 pounds and I believe this is her ideal weight. GISELE is available for adoption through Give a Dog a Home, German Shepherd Dog Rescue for an adoption fee of $170. We transport our dogs 'home' via Rescue Road Trips bi-monthy for a fee of $185. Our adoption process and online application can be found under the application tab. (Less)

This timid little girl is Prancer. And you would be timid too if you found yourself in a high kill shelter and your future unknown. Prancer is less than a year old, She is a lab blended with shepherd perhaps? Her coloring is beautiful as you can see in her video and you will also see that she is quite camera shy. German Shepherd Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Sweet Girlie was found as a stray in Georgia, hungry and tired. Now that we have gotten to know her we find it hard to believe no one came looking for her. Girlie seems to be about 2 years old and weighs 54 lbs after gaining the 22 lbs she needed to look and feel better. She is absolutely wonderful with children, other dogs and even cats. Girlie has not met a living thing that she does not love. But mostly she is looking for 'her person', someone she can love and adore all her livelong days. She remains humble upon meeting her, but warms up quickly and has such a lovely calm disposition. That's not to say once she goes to her forever ... Rescue Me ID: 14-12-07-00616STARLA (female)

German Shepherd    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

STARLA was saved from San Antonio Animal Care Services literally an hour before they was going to kill her. They had labelled her as having distemper due to her walking funny and 'fly biting'. When I got there to pick her up it was clear to me that she had been injured in her hips or back legs and would need x-rays and surgery. I researched the fly-biting and this could be due to trauma, a bad habit (like dogs chasing their tails) or a mild form of epilepsy. STARLA was taken to the vets and x-rays showed she had both of her hips were dislocated and her pelvis was broken. She had surgery which entailed her hips being 'toggled' back into the ... (Read More)sockets to hopefully stop them keep falling out and had plates on her pelvis. STARLA is an amazing girl and was walking around within days. It has been several months since she had the surgery and she has been fantastic, no problems at all; she gets around as if nothing had happened. STARLA is however, extremely thin, this is due to her being so starved and her stomach having shrunk so much, it will take a long time for her to gain the weight and get to how she should be. Nonetheless she eats well, she is on joint supplements and immune support supplements, she gets on great with all the dogs and doesn't even mind small puppies climbing all over her. STARLA is extremely affectionate she will follow me around and when I am sat down she has to be lying as close as physically possible and if she is able she will either lean, or have some part of her body touching my foot/leg. She can get vocal if she is in the way and other dogs are trying to get past her, but that just adds to her personality. STARLA still does the 'fly-biting' and it really is unknown what it truly is and what caused it. We have tried her on anti-seizure medications and they didn't do anything to help this, other than make her very docile from the drugs. So, she has not had any medications and although the fly biting can be regular or sparse it doesn't seem to worry her at all. She loves to cuddle on the bed and just be wherever I am. She will do well with a family that wants a velco-dog, one that has got so much love to give and will always be by your side. All she wants in return is love and caring, she enjoys car rides and is very friendly with people and children. She has not been round cats since we don't have them at the rescue, however, I am not sure if she would care about them. If she did I don't think it would be difficult thing to get her out of, but that would depend on the family and how much time they had to put into working with her. STARLA loves to go on walks and of course until she has gained her full weight the distance should be gradual and at her own pace. STARLA is 2 years old, spayed, rabies, up to date on vaccines, de-wormed, heart-worm tested Negative and micro-chipped. STARLA is available for adoption through Give a Dog a Home, German Shepherd Dog rescue. We are located in Devine, south of San Antonio, in the high kill state of Texas. Our adoption fee is $170. We do offer our dogs for adoption to safe and loving families that live along the East and West Coasts. We use professional transportation companies to ensure their safe arrival. Rescue Me ID: 14-12-07-00400BECKY (female)

German Shepherd Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: High Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

This stunning young beauty is BECKY. She was adopted from a high kill shelter in Texas to what she thought would be her forever home. Sadly, they did not give her a chance and she was returned to once again be on death row. We here at Give a Dog a Home, German Shepherd Dog Rescue, saved her and brought her into our pack. Becky is extremely active, LOVES her toys, LOVES to run and play chase. Just like young children, she can get vocal when she plays and gets excited. Becky is responsive to commands. Although we have not done any formal training with her, she will be very easy to train. Becky would suit an active family who have the ... (Read More)time and willingness to give her the mental and physical exercise that she needs to keep her busy and out of mischief. Becky is great with kids, as long as they respect her boundaries and understand that dogs too need time to be left alone. We do not have cats in rescue so we cannot say how she is with cats. However, she is still relatively young and could be taught to leave them alone, if she did have that 'interest'. Becky has an estimated birth date around February 2nd,2013. She is spayed, rabies, current on her vaccines, tested NEGATIVE for heart-worm disease, de-wormed and micro-chipped Becky is available for adoption through Give a Dog a Home, German Shepherd Dog rescue. Rescue Me ID: 14-11-23-00477OWEN (male)

German Shepherd    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

OWEN is a handsome, sweet, gentle White German Shepherd Dog. He was found as a stray in the Poteet area of Texas. Taken to the vets and posted on lost and found sites, no microchip, no owners. So OWEN came to GaDaH. Owen was walking funny and had ear problems so I took him to the vets - he had bad yeast ear infection, which has been treated and cleared up. He also walked funny, which we thought was a problem with his paws but under examination it was deemed more of a neurological problem called 'over-stepping' which is where he cannot always associate how far the ground is away and so he over exaggerates his walk. This causes him ... (Read More)absolutely NO problem at all. OWEN runs and plays as well as all the other dogs, he just looks a little goofy in doing so. OWEN absolutely LOVES the water, he is so much fun to watch as his movements are over-exaggerated. OWEN is very affectionate and loving and would suit a family that had a big yard where he could run and play - a kiddie pool in the warm weather is a MUST as this gives him so much pleasure, so a family that can live with a dog that likes to get wet :) Due to his issue, OWEN obviously won't be a good candidate for a running companion and walking at a human pace could cause him discomfort, so OWEN would be best with a big back yard and rides to some great spots where he can explore and venture in new environments. OWEN does walk on the leash and is fine on short distances, but he does pull so would need some training and guidance. OWEN lives here at the rescue with all the other dogs and gets on with them great, he loves chasing the puppies and of course jumping and splashing in the kiddie pool. We do free feed here at the rescue and OWEN can be a bit grumpy when eating in that he will growl at the other dogs. Some dogs will walk away and come back when he has gone, other dogs just ignore him. He has never done anything other than vocal and I believe that is just from being a stray and having to fend for himself. He has never been aggressive at any time. OWEN has been estimated at 3~4 years old, he is neutered, rabies, core vaccines, de-wormed and tested heart-worm negative. The video posted was taken in June and shows OWEN with a lot of the rescue dogs. Some of these dogs have since been adopted, but it will give you an idea of OWEN's love of water and his gait. You can adopt Owen and give him a loving home in time for the holidays! We use Rescue Road Trips to bring our great dogs from the rescue in south Texas to loving adopters up north. Go to www.giveadogahome-sanantonio.org to complete an adoption application. Transport space fills up quickly, so don't wait. Owen would like some really good treats in his Christmas stocking, but most of all, he'd love his very own fur-ever home! Adoption fee includes transport cost. (Less)

BELLE, is very affectionate, sweet and loving young girl with a very gentle laid back temperament. Of course she loves to play and run around, but generally she is just happy to be close by and when she looks at you she looks directly into your soul. BELLE's mother was a pure bred German Shepherd and her puppies (born Dec. 2012) contracted distemper. All the pups were given the distemper serum and antibiotics and did very well. BELLE had neurological complications that were caught early on and she had surgery that was 100% successful. Belle has NO neurological side effects of distemper! However this did cause Belle to loose most of her ... (Read More)teeth. This does not hinder her in anyway at all. She happily eats with all the other dogs, takes treats and bones too. Belle, the survivor, knows how to use the dog door, is spayed, current on vacs, micro chipped and is looking for a loving forever on the East coast. German Shepherd    Age: Young Adult

Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Our 60-pound country girl, Marley, has the disposition of her namesake with none of the quirky antics. Marley has just graduated 'boot camp' and is ready to assume her rightful position as a valued family member. Our version of boot camp is a 4-6 week stay at a local volunteer's property where the shelter dogs can be assessed and problem areas addressed. When Marley first arrived, she could not navigate a steep set of stairs (challenging to some humans, too) and would wait for the foster to come get her when going either up or down. Now she flies up and down the stairs with ease. After playing outside, she comes in the house, goes ... (Read More)immediately to her blanket and settles down to watch TV. Marley is about 3 yrs old , is UTD on all shots, and is HW negative. She is good on a leash, likes to ride in the car and absolutely ADORES swimming. She gets along with dogs of all sizes and even seems to have a calming influence on them, as she is quiet and rarely barks. She is housebroken and seems to respond well to commands. In fact, the foster said she actually does better when given a command, as if she prefers instruction. We are hoping Marley can find a home with someone who is active and likes to exercise. She would dearly love a visit to the beach or lake and would probably have no hesitation with a swimming pool. We can test her in both areas if that is an issue for a potential adopter. If you think Marley should be your calming influence, please copy and attach this link to your web browser to fill out our online application, http://members.petfinder.com/~CT243/sampleform.html. Full vetting included in her $325 adoption fee and transport from Louisianna is $185.We cannot be certain what her true mix is. (Less)
