Bruiser is a handsome eight-year-old, male black shepherd-mix looking for a loving guardian. Bruiser's family gave him up to Chicago Animal Care and Control, and Oak Park Animal Care League rescued him from there. He may be middle-aged, but he still loves to play fetch and go for long walks! He has the typical loyalty, intelligence and protectiveness of a shepherd. He loves to be pet and brushed, is housebroken, walks great on leash and is active but also enjoys his naptime. Bruiser loves people of all ages, but could make friends with another dog as well. Due to his protectiveness, he is looking for a very special and patient ... (Read More)dog-experienced person who will keep him safe from his own impulses. He is healthy, neutered, up-to-date on vaccines, heartworm-tested and micro-chipped. German Shepherd Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Needs to be Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Pri is a mix from both a purebred German Shepherd and a purebred Great Pyrenees. She weighs about 80 lbs. She is almost a year old and loves to play. She is housebroken without any incident in over four months. She knows basic commands like 'lay', 'sit' and 'shake' and she is a very quick learner. Due to some unforseen circumstances with my wife's health and employment demands we are no longer able to provide for her and give her the home that she deserves. She has grown up around our daughter and is pretty good with kids. We are looking for a home for her immediately so please call me and we can set up a meet and greet.

Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Bruiser is an 8 yr old Shepherd Mix who really needs a second chance. Bruiser was turned into animal control by his family 8 years after adopting him from that same facility. Bruiser was transferred to ACL for a second shot and to hopefully find a home to carry out his golden years. He is a very sweet dog who loves long walks, playing fetch and loves to be petted and brushed. Bruiser is an affectionate, loyal dog who will not only be your best friend but will also be your protector. His German Shepherd genes tend to make him wary of some people including tall men or men with hats. Bruiser's trust can be earned with a proper ... (Read More)introduction. He knows many commands, walks well on the leash and is potty trained. Bruiser prefers the company of people, but could potentially get along/live with another calm/laid back dog. Because he has been used to living in a home for the last 8 years, Brusier is very stressed at the shelter and really hopes his new family will find him soon. Could that be you? (Less)

German Shepherd Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Meet Jamie! DOB 11/7/13 Jamie is just an amazing sweetheart that was abandoned in the Alabama. We brought her to Illinois to find her forever home and show her love. She has come a long way in the short time she has been here and is getting more confident every day. She is shy at first, but she really does want to please and once she meets you and finds you are not there to harm her, she begins to relax. She is adjusting well to a schedule, is crate trained (she goes right in), and she will snuggle with you in bed if allowed but when it's bedtime she wants in her crate! She had not been house broken at all and has caught on very quickly! ... (Read More)She is almost fully house broken'|you just need to watch for her cues. She's very quiet and doesn't bark so it took a little while to learn her 'signals' to go out. She paces by the door but if she is not seen right away she may have an accident. She is great with kids, has a 9 year old in her foster home, but is timid with kids at first. She would do best in a home with a fenced a yard and another dog to play with. She was terrified at first of car rides but now she seems to enjoy them! She walks well on a leash and loves taking walks! Most of all, she is super loveable....not an ounce of aggression at all'|just wants someone to love her! She will need another playful canine to live with and a fenced yard. Standard adoption fee is $295 (cash or check) and includes spay/neuter at our participating vets, immunizations/shots up to the point of adoption, fecal, deworming, frontline, 1st vet visit at one of our participating vets, micro-chipping and 30 days of shelter care insurance. We must have an application, conduct a phone interview, and meet your entire family to approve an adoption. Please email Kathy for an application at safehavendogs@yahoo.com. Rescue Me ID: 15-03-10-00074CHELSEA (female)

German Shepherd Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Meet Chelsea - 3 Year Old Coonhound / Shepherd Mix Chelsea was found as a stray in Tennessee in January of 2014. She was found to be Heartworm Positive which may have deterred potential adopters due to the cost of treatment. In July of 2014, our rescue visited the Tennessee shelter and met Chelsea. She stood out in the hearts of our volunteers and in October we brought her into our program in Illinois and treated her for Heartworm. When Chelsea left the shelter she was a typical rambunctious dog that had been cooped up for too long. She loved to run and play with the other dogs in her foster home and loved to have the freedom to run in a ... (Read More)fenced in yard. She would occasionally jump up for attention or 'mouth' you by putting your hand or arm in her mouth if she is not getting all the attention she would like, but we are working on this and she stops as soon as you say 'No'. She had almost fully corrected this before she had her Heartworm treatment, but since she had to be kept quiet with minimal activity, she started doing this for attention. This has diminished again now that she is allowed more exercise. Chelsea does not wag her tail to show she is happy. At one time in her life, she suffered an injury to her tail that makes her unable to wag. You can see happiness in her ears, eyes, and facial expressions, but she just cannot wag her tail. What she lacks in wagging, she makes up for in beauty! Chelsea quickly learned house manners. She willingly goes into her crate and sleeps at night, but also sleeps in bed with her foster occasionally and prefers that! With only a couple of corrections, she learned what toys were hers to play with and chew (she loves Nylabones!) and leaves everything else alone. She is crated during the day, but only because there are several other dogs in her foster home. When left out and alone for short periods, she has gone to lay in a bed or a chair to wait for her people to return. She is housebroken and will ring a bell hung on the door to let you know she needs to go out. She gets along great with other dogs and children, she has not been exposed to cats. Chelsea is an amazing dog that would make an excellent addition to a family that is willing to give her the love and attention she deserves. Standard adoption fee is $295 (cash or check) and includes spay/neuter at our participating vets, immunizations/shots up to the point of adoption, fecal, deworming, frontline, 1st vet visit at one of our participating vets, micro-chipping and 30 days of shelter care insurance. Rescue Me ID: 15-03-08-00349Petunia (female)

German Shepherd Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Petunia is a loving, friendly two year old tricolor shepherd mix. She came to us as a stray, and though she was never claimed, it's clear from her happy-go-lucky attitude with people that she was once loved and cared for. Petunia loves toys and cuddles, and she makes a great walking and hiking buddy. We believe Petunia was kept outdoors for most of her life - she's still very unsure of normal household situations. She was startled by a ceiling fan! For this reason, Petunia needs a home that's willing to take her to training and to be patient with her as she learns to be an inside pet for the first time in her life. Petunia is housebroken, ... (Read More)and she's friendly with other dogs given a proper introduction. Because she's so new to home life, we wouldn't recommend her in a home with young children who may be too much for her. German Shepherd Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Peaches is looking for a family that loves hugs! She is a beautiful, mild mannered, and affectionate smaller lab mix! At only 45 lbs, she will make a great medium size family companion. Her name says it all this little girl is a true Peach! Cute, quiet, crate trained, house trained, walks well on a leash knows a few basic commands and she loves to give hugs and get attention. Peaches is approximately 2 years old, she is a medium energy girl. Since completing her heartworm treatment, she is healthy and her energy level has increased. Peaches, adores humans, so far there is not one she does not like and will walk up and hug anyone who ... (Read More)will hug her back. She likes and plays well with other dogs, and is very good with the felines too. She likes to go for walks and she loves to play ball. Her favorite place is anywhere you are! Even though her tail is always wagging, Peaches can be a little timid at times. She really wants to please and will look for approval. Once she is given an OK sign, her whole body is wagging. Sometimes loud noise or sudden movements will startle her, but is learning that she is safe and reacting less. Peaches would do well in a home with or without another dog to play with, but I think her preference would be to have a playmate. Older children would be best as she does like to give hugs and even though she is gentle and small she is strong. She does seem to be drawn to older children. Perhaps in her last home she had an older two legged companion. A 4 ft or taller fenced in yard is preferred, since she has the ability to jump a 3 ft fence. Standard adoption fee is $295 (cash or check) and includes spay/neuter when age appropriate at our participating vets, up-to-date on shots, fecal, deworming, frontline, 1st vet visit at one of our participating vets, micro-chipping and 30 days of shelter care insurance. German Shepherd Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Not Good w/ Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

DOB 2/14/13 Piper was a stray in rural Missouri, a place where dogs are commonly left behind when the owners move or can no longer afford their care. Many of these pups don't make it, but Piper was lucky enough to be found by a compassionate soul that arranged for her to join our rescue. Our best guess is that she is a lab/husky/shepherd mix, but we are sure there are several other beeds that contribute to her beautiful 'fluffy' tail, stunning looks and amazing intelligence. Piper is very smart! She is potty trained, crate trained, walks great on a leash, knows all basic commands, and rides well in a car. She loves to play with other ... (Read More)dogs, go on long walks and run around in the backyard. She can also be silly and makes her fosters laugh at how goofy and cute she is. If you are looking for a pup that is well rounded and lively, Piper would like to meet you! Piper does not have children in her foster home and she does have the energy of a puppy. She wants to play with everyone and doesn't know that her playfulness might scare child that has not had dogs...she just wants to play! There is ONE thing that Piper does not appreciate...that is cats! So she would do best in a home without them. Piper is a wonderful, sweet dog that is looking for a HOME to call her very OWN! German Shepherd Mix    Age: Young Adult

Destiny is a four-year-old, 60-pound, smart, affectionate and loyal, female black shepherd/terrier-mix looking for a loving guardian. Destiny was rescued after surviving a neglectful and abusive puppyhood. She is currently living in a foster home with two Great Danes who she loves to herd, play with, and chase. After acclimating to her foster home she has proven mild-mannered and calm. However, she does carry with her the residual fears from her traumatized youth. She is incredibly loving and devoted to her foster dad, and seeks out his attention and approval. She is also very protective of him. Destiny is housebroken and kennel-trained. ... (Read More)Destiny is sometimes nervous in new situations and when meeting new people. However, she's a smart girl who can acclimate if given time and patience. Destiny is also nervous meeting new dogs and requires a gradual introduction; she does best with dogs her size and larger. She does not do well with small dogs, cats, rabbits, etc. Like most dogs, Destiny loves routine '| her morning belly rubs, playing with her favorite Great Dane friend and going for walks. She gets nervous with change. So, Destiny is looking for an experienced and patient dog-lover preferably with another large dog to give her the consistency and calm life in which to thrive. Compatibility: Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Major is a one-year-old, 24-pound, tiny Shepherd-mix looking for a loving guardian. This little guy was the product of divorce. A couple was getting divorced and no one could take the dog. It's obvious they didn't treat him well, train him or care for him because he is nervous and defensive when he meets new people. Major gets along with other small dogs like himself, but is afraid of large dogs and children. Major is looking for a patient dog-lover willing to devote the time, energy and training to bring Major around to loving and trusting people again.

German Shepherd Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs
Personality: Low Energy, Very Submissive
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current, Heartworm Positive

Eddie is a handsome boy who was left behind with 4 other dogs when his owners moved away. One of which was thought to be his mother was found shot and dead in the house, another dog had been shot outside and was laying there dead. Eddie kept returning to lay next to the dead dog in the house and was very frightened. The neighbor was threatening to shoot the 3 remaining dogs if they were not gone. A rescue stepped up for the 2 female dogs leaving Eddie all by himself with the dead dogs. We offered to take Eddie when no one else would. He was caught by a great rescuer who is the one who let everyone know of the dogs plight. Put in boarding ... (Read More)for vetting and until we could get transport, he was voted the best pet at the Vet hospital he was being boarded at! Very shy at first but once he knows you he is just such a loving dog. He has a great personality, gets along well with a large variety of dogs, and is low energy. We haven't had him around any children so not sure on children. He is shy around strangers unless they take the time to let him warm up. He didnt know how to walk on a leash and is still a bit unsure about it but it is amazing how fast he learns and wants to please for attention. He is fully vetted, heart worm positive and on slow kill heart worm treatment. About 60 pounds and 2 to 3 years old. We required a vet clinic phone number you use currently, or if no current pets your last vets number to call for a reference prior to adopting. (Less)

German Shepherd Mix    Age: Puppy

Personality: Average Energy, Very Submissive
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Buddy was rescued with his mother and 3 siblings. Mom appears to be Shepherd collie. There was a purebred looking male shepherd on the property we were told was the father. Rocky looks like a longer coated shepherd collie mix. He is very sweet, and very shy with strangers. They came from a terrible situation. All 5 dogs rescued from the location are terrified of children and run and hide. He is very submissive with teens and adults. and would prefer to also hide from them until he knows them. About 10 to 11 months old, UTD vaccination, neutered and on heartworm preventative. He is great with a wide range of dogs, submissive to them yet loves to play and even the crabby dogs who don't want to play often learn to play when they are kenneled with him. He has no interest in cats. A home with another happy outgoing dog would be perfect so he can gain more confidence from the other dog. He is one of my favorite dogs as hard as I try not to have favorites. He has a sweet collie personality. A current or past vet you have used for pets number is required for us to call for a reference prior to adoption. We have many other rescued dogs available also to choose from. Contract on adoption. German Shepherd    Age: Adult

Personality: Average Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Luna is a very beautiful, sweet, snuggly and active, nine-year-old, 62-pound, female White German Shepherd with three legs looking for a loving guardian. Luna was found running stray near Lincoln and Kimball in Chicago on May 28th. Despite the fact that she is micro-chipped, all attempts to find her original guardian have been unsuccessful. She was adopted from the Sangamon County Animal Control nine years ago. We don't know what happened to her leg, but running stray, she could easily have been hit by a car. With only three legs, Luna still runs fast! In the home, she's perfectly housebroken, non-destructive and a lovely couch potato who ... (Read More)enjoys resting on the couch. In the yard, she chases squirrels and bunnies, so she's looking for a home without cats, bunnies or even other dogs. Typical of a shepherd, Luna has a big scary bark, but once you get to know her, it is all bluff and bravado. She loves treats and they are certainly the way to her heart; she takes them appreciatively and very gently from your fingers. She is strong and strong-willed; so she's looking for an experienced shepherd-lover to take her under their wing. Luna is healthy, spayed, up-to-date on vaccines, micro-chipped, heartworm-tested and fecal-tested. To meet and possibly adopt Luna, please contact her rescuer and foster mom Aggie at adorosz@yahoo.com or 773-980-0250. Her adoption fee of $125 benefits rescued pets. She is being fostered near Lincoln and Kimball in Chicago, Illinois. (Less)
