Roscoe is a two year old German Shepherd whose owners moved and left him so neighbors turned him over to a kill shelter in Texas. Fortunately, we saw him and rescued him! He had a pretty nasty flea allergy that caused some of his hair to fall out but it is growing back in nicely now. He is such a great dog!! He does very well with his foster brother and sister and does everything he can to avoid confrontation, but if they do not let up he will let them know he has had enough but does not fight. He is neutered, current on vaccinations, microchipped, heart worm tested NEGATIVE (although TX said he was positive but when we tested with four tests at our vet he is negative and TX admitted they made a mistake), fecal/wormed, and kept on monthly preventatives. Any dog that is six months of age or older will be tested for Heartworms and if found negative, will be kept on Heartworm prevention during their shelter stay, after the adoption it is up to the adopter to continue the highly recommended Heartworm preventative treatment. Also all PPAS shelter dogs are treated with a monthly topical flea/tick preventative and we ask that adopters continue that treatment as well. The hold fee is non refundable. We encourage folks that are interested in a certain animal to put down a hold fee (a credit card number may be given over the phone) to ensure the animal they are interested is available for their meet and greet. You may put down a 1 day hold for $20.00 without an approved application but anything longer than that we will need an approved application on file. Putting the animal on hold makes it so others can not have a meet and greet with the said animal until the hold expires. Holds are on a first call/come first serve basis. You must call or come in, holds can not be put down via email. You must also submit an adoption application for the dog for any hold over 1 day. In person meet and greet - potential adopters must come and meet the animal before an adoption can take place. We can not do over the phone sight unseen adoptions. Because of financial constraints our days and hours vary. Business hours should be listed on website (www.prairiepaws.org) or at end this post. If you have other animals we encourage you to bring to the meet and greet. We have animal runs outside the facility where the meet and greet can take place. The adoption application must be filled out and approved. If you have other pets, we call your vet to make sure their vaccinations are up to date. We can not approve the application until they are. It's great if you want to include current documentation on up to date vaccinations with your application. Speeds the process along. Once approval has been given an adoption fee must be paid in full - no partial payments. Adoption fees vary. Please note if you live in the city of Ottawa a dog license fee must also be paid. Taking your animal home - all cats and dogs must be sterilized (spayed/neutered) before going to their new homes, it is a state requirement. In most cases animals will have already been sterilized before hitting the adoption floor and you will be available to take your new companion home with you the day of adoption with an approved application. About 2 years old. This young dog is doing great with other dogs. He just attended a pet walk with lots of other dogs, new people of all ages and plenty of commotion and he was wonderful! Zeus is currently enjoying time in a home environment with a big dog and a little dog and a couple of nice people. When he is ready for a break from the family and other dogs, he goes to his 'spot' and relaxes. We have been really impressed with this sweet dog. Oakley is a sweetheart. She has been my baby for 5-6 years now. I've had her since she was a puppy, but with as much anxiety as I have, it's making her throw up all the time. She gains weight & then loses it again a lot. Right now, she's so anxious, she's chewing & biting all her fur off. We've treated her for fleas, but the treatments aren't helping & she brings them in on her fur when she goes out to potty. We've treated our yard & it's not helping either. Zorro is a happy dog that loves to run and play. He has been in puppy training as well as social classes and has done well. He knows sit, uhuh, gentle, leave it and several other commands. He has perimeter training and stay in his bounds well. He is protective of those he loves. He loves water. He has an issue with food guarding and as we hav extremely small children this presents a potential danger to them. German Shepherd Dogs can make good pets in Kansas if they match your IifestyIe. The German Shepherd is a large, highly intelligent working dog. German Shepherds are very protective, but not hostile; they make great guard dogs and wonderful companions. German Shepherds should be well socialized early in life. German Shepherds that are properly trained and socialized are good with children and other pets. This breed can adapt to apartment life with sufficient exercise.
