Rescue Me ID: 13-12-04-00480Hannah (female)
I found Hannah about a year and a half ago (March 2012) on the Susquehanna river in Owego. According to friends that live nearby, she had been there for two weeks, feeding off of a road killed deer. After feeding her for six days and gaining her confidence, I got a collar and leash on her and took her home (April Fools Day!). We took her to the vet to check for a micro chip and an exam. No chip. He looked her over and said she was healthy but had some worms and Lyme disease. His best guess is that she's about 4 1/2 to 5 years old and she's been spayed. I checked the Internet , local papers, everywhere and nobody was looking for her. She'd been abandoned. We tried to find her a home for months with no luck. Not many people want a 95 lb. shepherd. My son said he would keep her at the house in Little Meadows as I was getting married and moving to Owego. Our other rescue dog, Jack, does not get along with her so she can't live with me in Owego. She gets along well with most other dogs. It seemed like Hanna had found a home. She lives on a one lane, dead end, dirt road with only one neighbor. Plenty of room to run and be a dog. Then, on April first of this year, she was hit by a truck. It shattered her right front leg. There was so much damage to the bone that it wouldn't heal properly. After two weeks, she had to have it removed. She recovered quickly from the surgery and has adapted very well. It's been six months since she lost her leg and it hasn't slowed her down much. This dog is a survivor. In August of this year my son decided to go to school in California. Hanna could not go with him so we started looking for a home again. We had a couple that wanted to take her, but they lived on the second floor of their house. She would have to deal with 14 stairs. We felt that sooner or later she would stumble going down, and that it wasn't a good fit for her. She has been alone for over five weeks now. I stop in every morning at 5:30 to let her out to run for 15 to 20 minutes. I stop in at 5:30 on my way home and we go out for over an hour. Since we went to Standard time, both are in the dark. On the weekends I keep the same schedule but I take her out for several hours each time. I can't keep doing this and she really needs a family to be with. She seems to have accepted this new role as the lone protector of the house and patiently waits for me to pull in the driveway. She hasn't had one accident or chewed anything up in boredom or frustration in this time period, or ever for that matter. I'm willing to keep her at the house for as long as need be. I would be willing to meet people at the house to meet her or talk to them on the phone to answer any questions. You can contact me via email or cell phone. My number is 607-972-6457. I will send some pics of her before and after the accident. Thank you for your time and doing the job you do. Sincerely, Greg Harris (Less)

Buddy is a 4 1/2 yr old Purebred CKC GSD neutered. He's always been a family pet raised with other dogs is not fond of cats and recently not happy about the toddler in the house. Recent growling towards the baby is starting to make me nervous especially since i was bit in the face and body about 2 months ago by a dog at my work place. I can't get past the what if it happens. Would rather make sure Buddy goes to a loving home that will help him live a full life. He has bad hips after a reaction to a vaccine it is either hip dysplasia or arthritis. Please help me help him.

Animal ID: A0974791Max (male)
ONLY 10 MONTH OLD PUPPY .. NEEDS HOME ASAP His foster writes: Max is very sweet. He is still a puppy and so full of energy. I have taught him sit, lay down, stay and have really worked on his pulling in which he is so much improved. I bought a haltie leash for him so I think that has helped. So far he has been friendly with my dog, but we are still working on his manners approaching other dogs. He is very excited, which some dogs don't like so that is a work in progress. He follows me around a lot and barks at times when I leave. I've crate trained him so very few accidents in the apartment. He is gaining weight and turning into an amazing pet! WHEN U CONTACT NYC ACC MAKE SURE TO GIVE HIS NAME AND ID NUMBER : email firstname.lastname@example.org but ONLY if serious about adopting, and ONLY if you are able to GO TO the shelter in-person. Please do not email for status updates... the only thing you will accomplish is spamming their inbox and causing REAL adopter emails to go un-noticed. |Rescue Me ID: 13-11-09-00059Smokey (male)|
Free to good home (kirkwood) I am offering a 135lb male fixed German Shepard who we have had since he was 8 weeks old. Last five years he has become over protective, aggressive to outsiders and has bit a few people (including me, got in between our two cats that were playing too rough) he is loving to us. I am being straight forward and letting you know that he may or may not take to someone else, but I feel with the right person who understands Shepard behavior, he can be a good watchdog and protector for someone else. I cant keep him anymore. If i dont adopt him out to someone - I will have to have him put down .. I have a 4 year grandson who I need to protect first and foremost .. and this is breaking my heart.. I really hope someone is out there that can take him (only for good) If you want him for immoral reasons and will abuse him.. dont reply .. Please text 607 two three seven 2405 Thank you (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 13-10-20-00446Lucky (male)
Lucky Is a Bit Down on His Luck When Lucky's family was hit by hard times, they reluctantly had to bring him, and his sister, Roxy, to the shelter. Lucky, a handsome 7-year-old male shepherd mix, is now looking for a new family. Lucky is a dedicated family dog, protective and loyal. He knows several commands and is athletic, intelligent, and energetic. He and Roxy spent much of their time outside, so he would do best in a home with a yard, though we'd like him to have plenty of indoor family time too. He would also do best with an experienced handler and no cats. Can you help turn Lucky's luck around?? If you'd like to meet him, please call or stop by the shelter. If you take him home, you and he will both be LUCKY indeed!! For a faster response to your inquiries please phone the shelter at (845) 452-7722 or come and visit us 11:30-4 Monday, Friday, Saturday & Sunday or 11:30-7 Tuesday and Thursday. (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 13-10-18-00144banshee (female)
Banshee is a 1yr old German shepherd. She is a good dog but has some behavior issues that have caused me to get rid of her. She is extremely skittish about everything. This causes her to fear people and other animals. She has nipped people who try to pet her. It takes her a long time to know someone.

Super friendly large dog. Loved by his family but not great with kids that are not his own. He is great at the groomers and enjoys walks. He knows basic commands and is very intelligent. He listens very well. Family will be very sad to see him go but with children getting older and bringing friends over, he has to be seperated from everyone, which makes all of us sad. Please help give this dog the home he deserves.

German Shepherd Dogs can make good pets in New York if they match your IifestyIe. The German Shepherd is a large, highly intelligent working dog. German Shepherds are very protective, but not hostile; they make great guard dogs and wonderful companions. German Shepherds should be well socialized early in life. German Shepherds that are properly trained and socialized are good with children and other pets. This breed can adapt to apartment life with sufficient exercise.
