Bear was seized this week from a person who left him behind in the apartment after being evicted. He must be placed in foster care or adopted as he risks being euthanized. He is 2 yrs. old, shepard, border collie mix. Bear and his brother who also needs a home were at the vet and are on meds for the fleas and yeast infection. I found out about this 2 year old Shepard mix that was going to be put down at a local vet, I had to step in and adopt this young boy. The previous owner found the Puppy after it was dumped on the side of the road in Lebanon and was brought back to the US. The dog has had previous training and is truly a great dog that has great potential. **An adoption that we had secured for Vixen in September with a wonderful retired couple has fallen through due to a death in their family. She needs someone new to fall in love with her again.** Vixen was found wandering in the cargo areas of JFK airport several months ago. When she came home with me to be fostered, she was terrified of people. But over the past several months in foster care, she has blossomed into a wonderful companion. She is an incredibly sweet and kind dog, with a very calm temperament. We think she is a kelpie and/or german shepherd mix, on the small side for those breeds at 28 lbs. She is absolutely gorgeous, and my ... (Read More)neighbors have taken to calling her 'wolfie', though personally I think she looks more like a fox. She's still somewhat shy, but she is continuing to overcome her fears, becoming more bold and playful each week. She has even started to offer her belly for rubs! And she will spoon with me for a while before going to sleep at night. She's gotten great at greeting new people on the street too. We think she would do best with an experienced dog lover who can continue to guide her through the process to becoming totally secure. The vet estimates that she is somewhere in the range of 8-10 yrs old. In her middle age, she's developed some gastrointestinal issues--don't we all? But they are being successfully treated with medication and proper diet. We've taken her on vacation to Cape Cod, and she absolutely blossomed in an environment with a backyard to explore. While that would be an ideal setting, she would be quite happy to live and follow you around in an apartment. She does really well with other dogs and with cats, though she clearly prefers to spend time with her human caretaker. She answers to her name and even comes to me when called. She has received all vaccinations and is spayed and micro-chipped. Please share this far and wide, especially if know of anyone with a yard, or even just a lot of love to give in an apartment. At nine years old, Vixen is older than many potential adopters are willing to consider, so we are open to placing her out of state in order to find the best possible situation. Emma is a beautiful 2 & 1/2 year old German Shepherd/Setter mix. She lived with a good friend of mine who was found dead on July 28th. There was another dog in the home as well, but that one passed away. Upon the death the dog was immediately taken to the local shelter. A family member tried to adopt the dog/take home, it did not work out as Emma didn't get along with the other dog in the home, nipped at one daughter and bit the husband. German Shepherd Dogs can make good pets in New York if they match your IifestyIe. The German Shepherd is a large, highly intelligent working dog. German Shepherds are very protective, but not hostile; they make great guard dogs and wonderful companions. German Shepherds should be well socialized early in life. German Shepherds that are properly trained and socialized are good with children and other pets. This breed can adapt to apartment life with sufficient exercise.
