This boy is 20 months old, he is utterly amazing. His knowledge of the English language is unbelievable. He has former training in search and rescue, although we never attended the class (because of his brother) he is very trainable if that's what you wish to do. He understands two languages and is very assertive caring loyal and loving. Having this boy since he was 6.5 weeks old this young man is my heart n soul. Breaks my heart to have to rehome him. He absolutely loves just about every one unless he is given a reason not to. His scent is bionic and his sense is out of this world. He has never pegged some one wrong. You can leave doors ... (Read More)open and he will not go anywhere unless he is provoked. He adores children and women. Men it all depends on what he senses with them. He is normally easy going and playful, once he senses a 'bad guy' he is all business no matter what. (Less)

This boy is 20 months old and he needs a great home. He is loyal, smart, caring, and sensitive. He at times when needed is very protective and aggressive most of the time he is passive. Most of the time he is happy happy happy. I do have pictures of him but I am not posting them on here because its Craigslist and I have had a couple people try to steal him while I was at work, but the people didn't know there were two of them in this yard. If you don't belong here, they know and no one will be allowed in the yard at all for anything, unless they are told by me 'it's ok'. Other than that they will think you are a 'bad guy' and you will have ... (Read More)your hands full! Once I know you are legit and who you are then I will allow pictures out. There is a rehoming fee they will not be let go with out the rehoming fee or papers signed. Generally he is laid back and super easy going, your happiness is all he cares about. He is up to date with all of his vaccines and house trained. He is not destructive or mean. He loves women, children, and most men. He is choosy on the man and he has no choice on women or children. He does not like yelling or fighting. If you have a home that has a lot of arguing and yelling he will be major stressed out and will not be happy. (Less)

Genesis (Genny) is a one year old shepherd mix. Genny is spayed, microchipped and up to date on shots, she is in great health. The best home for Genny would be one where the family is active and enjoys playing with their animals; another dog and older children in the home would be wonderful (not toddlers) as Genny loves the company. Rescue Me ID: 15-05-02-00059TANNER (male)

German Shepherd Mix    Age: Senior

Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Meet sweet Tanner, a stunningly handsome senior who found his way to us from KY. This gorgeous, gentle boy found himself in an awful situation. His so-called 'family' in KY had had this boy from when he was 6 weeks old. But Tanner isn't a puppy anymore -- he is a senior boy (somewhere in the 7-10 yr range), and he is now developing cataracts. So, his 'family' abandoned him by dumping him in a high kill shelter in rural KY. Poor Tanner was very confused & so scared... His whole world was shattered... He did not know what was happening. But, luckily, our rescue partners in KY got the word out; and one of Safe At Last's former adopters ... (Read More)came forward and offered to foster this boy. By opening her home to Tanner, this wonderful, caring person saved Tanner from being euthanized and has given him a chance for a new life. So, yes, there are good people in this world who DO make a difference, and Tanner is finding that out. He is safe and loved and pampered, and he does not have to worry any more. Although Tanner has cataracts & has some vision impairment, he is not blind. He can see people and objects when they are up close to him. He can walk in the yard and in the house and does not bump into anything; so, he can see. He is also a healthy boy and still quite spry, as he jumped right into the vehicles transporting him to his new life. Tanner is also neutered, heartworm negative and up to date on his shots. He is also potty-trained. He is about 50 lbs and our best assessment is that he is a collie/shepherd mix. Once Tanner settles in a little more, we will investigate further with our vet the extent of his cataract/vision issue, and we will keep you updated. We will also see if it is possible to correct the problem. Tanner gets along great with the other dog in his foster home who is a senior as well. Tanner's foster mom reports that Tanner is following the other dog around and is quite happy in his company. Tanner also ignores cats, which is pleasant news for the kitty in his foster home. Due to his vision impairment, Tanner can be startled a bit easily; therefore, we are seeking a home without young children. We feel Tanner would do best in a quiet, settled home environment where he will feel secure being with his person/people and have his special needs met for the rest of his life. If you feel you have the ability to provide Tanner with a responsible, caring, secure home for life, we would love to hear from you. Please go to www.safeatlast.net to register. Then log back on to the website with your user name and password to complete the online adoption application. We will then contact you by email to set up a phone interview to commence the review process. Our process is very straightforward, but it does involve the phone interview, reference checks and a home assessment. If you have any questions, please email us at info@safeatlast.net. Please help show this abandoned senior boy that there are people who DO care and are willing to open their hearts to right an awful wrong. In the process, you will be welcoming into your home a canine family member who will love you for life. Thank you for helping us save shelter pets, one life at a time. (Less)

Joyful Rescues has welcomed 28 dogs and 3 cats all to be known as the 'MAX' collection, from a kill shelter in Tennessee thanks to a generous donation sponsoring the transport by MICHELLE ALESSI of Amherst, NY. Michelle chose the name in honor of her dearly departed dog, Max who Michelle referred to as 'a crusty marshmallow' a little grumpy, but a sweet mush on the inside! Still, he was dearly loved by Michelle and her late mother who now keeps watch, with Max, over Michelle and her dogs, Cleo and special needs, Gizzie. Michelle has a deep compassion for animals, especially those who are in their senior years, handicapped, or special ... (Read More)needs. Her one request in sponsoring this transport was that we would pull at least one animal who seemed a bit of an 'underdog'; so Katie pulled two! One is a dog with a deformed leg; the other a tri-pod cat with an abnormal eye. Thank you, Michelle, for helping us save so many more lives! Patches Max was born about March 23, 2013 and weighs about 55 lbs. He is a happy boy that is good with the other dogs and children. He is house trained and good on leash.. He is having a good time here and adores all us humans. (Less)

German Shepherd Mix    Age: Puppy

Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

I Really Adore My Humans! Cinder was born about April 27, 2014 and will top out about 60 lbs. Cinder's first birthday gift was to become homeless. He adored his humans and was wonderful with the children, extremely affectionate! He is good on leash and will hang with you outside off leash while you do your chores around the house. It seems that Cinder is going to need a new home where his humans are around much of the time, maybe a retired couple or a stay at home parent with children. He can be crated for short periods of time, but struggles with 6-8 hours in a crate. He is tan, grey, and then there are black square'ish spots telling ... (Read More)me there is some Catahoula in there. He is wonderful with other dogs. Cinder has been known to submissive pee, this is easy enough to stop with the right knowledge. You should never make a big deal out of arriving home and try to greet him outside in case there is some leakage. Also, you must never make a fuss over any leakage because that will make it worse. You just need to ignore it and clean it up in a few minutes. If you get angry, say 'NO PEE' or rush for cleanup it will not get better. Again, you ignore and clean it up in a few minutes. He is just being submissive which is a good thing...he just needs to gain confidence and not be punished. This is one really wonderful dog that just needs the right home, are you it? (Less)

German Shepherd Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

My Poor Nose! Tiger was born about November 6, 2014 and will probably top out about 60 lbs. The cuteness factor is way over the top! We are really guessing at his breed, he does look shepherdy, but his coat is a bit long and lush so maybe something like a chow was wandering the neighborhood. I'm sure he is mixed with a lot of different things. So, this cutie was found sitting in the brush along side a country road with his nose sliced open, a neighbor heard a car stop and the door slam and the car took off so he went to investigate. Dog control was called and no one came looking for him so we got him all spruced up and ready for ... (Read More)adoption! Dr. Hite at Camp Road Vet did a beautiful job stitching his nose. There will probably always be a scar, but it will be minimal. This pup is very happy in his foster home. He lives with a couple other large female dogs and he is very submissive with them, maybe one looks like his mama. He is all puppy, furry, very, very, cuddly, playful and good in the car. This little guy doesn't know he was road side litter, he just knows that now he is very loved, but he does need a real home. He is a little bit cautious with new humans, but it doesn't take long to be his buddy. You should see the way he wraps his arms around his foster daddy's neck! (Less)

German Shepherd Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed

CLARICE was saved from Fort Worth Animal Services on 5th February 2015. She was an owner surrender for reasons I do not know. She had been in isolation recovering from several wounds, suspected to be bite wounds. CLARICE came to rescue and has been doing great, her wounds have healed and she is an all round happy girl. She is very affectionate and gentle. CLARICE is great with other dogs and is happy to sit back and watch the world go by. CLARICE is a young girl who would benefit from an active family. Someone who understands the needs of this intelligent breed, who understands that they need lots of stimulation and both mental and ... (Read More)physical exercise. If they are left alone for long periods they get bored and boredom can and will turn into destructive behaviour. CLARICE is very responsive and I believe would be very easy to train and would absolutely benefit from some basic and advanced training with her new family so that boundaries and expectations can be set, and through the training, bonding and understanding of each others body-language can be gained. CLARICE is spayed, rabies, core vaccines, de-wormed, heart-worm tested NEGATIVE and mirco-chipped. She has an estimated date of birth of 30th June 2013 and at the time of rescue weighed 66 pounds. CLARICE is available for adoption through Give a Dog a Home, German Shepherd Dog Rescue for an adoption fee of $100 Although LOCATED in TEXAS we are using Rescue Road Trips LLC. and P.E.T.S. These are private companies and their transport fee's (which is paid directly to them) are $175 and $185 per dog. This fee is in addition to what you would pay the rescue for the adoption fee. Rescue Me ID: 15-04-25-00487SKYLAR (male)

German Shepherd Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: High Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

SKYLAR was saved from San Antonio Animal Care Services on 13th February 2015, the day he was due to be killed. SKYLAR had severe demodex mange and red in-flammed skin that is being treated and healing well. SKYLAR at the time of rescuing him was not leash trained and was very fearful of the leash, we think maybe he had been tied up outside and neglected. SKYLAR came over fearful and shy on initial meeting, but as soon as he met the dogs his confidence was re-gained, his tail was up and he started running around happily to be with his own kind. Over the first few days SKYLAR was trying to show dominance on the younger dogs, but was in ... (Read More)no way aggressive, it was more of him trying to find his place, also he had only been neutered the day before. SKYLAR does have high energy and likes to be running around playing rather than sitting relaxing, he will definitely need an active family. SKYLAR will need at minimum basic and hopefully advanced training, This not only sets the guidelines and expectations out for him, but helps a bond be formed and a clearer understand for both him and family of body language and personalities. SKYLAR is neutered, rabies, core vaccines, de-wormed and micro-chipped. He had tested positive for heart-worm disease which the rescue will be getting treated around the end of February. SKYLAR at time of rescue weighed around 40 pounds and has been given an estimated date of birth of 8 February 2013 (I do however, think he might be slightly younger as he acts very young - but I am not a vet!) SKYLAR is available for adoption through Give a Dog a Home, German Shepherd Dog Rescue for an adoption fee of $170 Although LOCATED in TEXAS we are using Rescue Road Trips LLC. and P.E.T.S. German Shepherd    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

REDUCED ADOPTION FEE! LOBO was saved from Fort Worth Animal Services on 31st January 2015. He had been at the shelter twice before but this time he was an owner surrender. The reason the family gave was because he kept escaping. His original owner found him.in a ditch when he was a puppy. LOBO does have a front claw foot, which was apparently a birth defect, where his toes are separated. He used the claw to climb the chain link fence. He went back home then a couple months later his owner had health issues and his wife brought took him to the shelter. He was adopted from the shelter again and then got out from that family and was picked ... (Read More)up by Animal Control. He is now safe in rescue and we will be sure to find him a perfect family that has time to spend with him and give him no reason to even want to climb a fence. LOBO is a very friendly boy, he is very active and jumps very high from a standing position, so it is easy to see that he can escape. LOBO is clealry an active boy and although at times he limps/hobbles on his front leg, his foot causes him no concern and there is no reason for any kind of surgery. LOBO needs an active family that will not just leave him outside to get up to mischief and find a way of escaping, he needs a family that will be an integral part of his life, who will take him places and spend lots of fun quality time with him. I have no doubt that with his energy he would do great and thoroughly enjoy activiites such as agility - he has a very high jump and clearly enjoys his energy. LOBO does need basic training and would benefit from a family who is willing to take the time to educate and train with him, a great way to bond and set boundaries and for each other to learn body language, voice tone and over-all personalities. LOBO does jump up a lot at the moment so families with small children would have to be cautious of this and make his jumping up a priority to work on, he is very responsive and I do not see it taking very long with the correct training and guidance. We do not have cats at the rescue so are unable to comment as to how he is with cats. LOBO is neutered, rabies, core vaccines, de-wormed, tested NEGATIVE for heart-worm disease and is mirco-chipped. He has an estimated date of birth of 28 May 2012 and currently weighs (January 2015) around 55 pounds.     Hello everyone I'd like you to meet General. He came to the shelter as a stray, we suspect someone had dumped him along side the road. He's pretty calm for a GSD but does enjoy playing with his toys and going on nice long walks. General's main issue is that he fear bites at strangers and doesn't like to be restrained. When he becomes comfortable around you, you can do just about anything to him. But it will take a great amount of time and dedication. Unfortunately he was adopted but soon returned because of this issue. He is great with other dogs, but probably not with cats.

I'm A Tail Wagger! Ladybug was born on April 22, 2007 and weighs about 60 lbs. With her unique coloring, we believe she may be a mix breed of mountain cur, popular in southern states. Ladybug came to us very scared from a high kill southern dog pound. After a little investigating we located her previous owners and learned what her real name was which helped us tremendously in bringing her out of her shell. Her previous owners told us they thought she was part bulldog, but except for her gorgeous brindle coat, she doesn't look anything like one. The owners said they couldn't afford to spay Ladybug and after she had another unwanted ... (Read More)litter, they took her and her puppies to the dog pound. Well, those cute puppies were saved by the local rescues but they all left the momma behind to face certain death without a rescue to save her. Well---we found her and brought her to our safe haven here in New York. Ladybug just loves people of all shapes and sizes. Despite not having any formal obedience and or knowing any commands, she listens very well to her foster mom. So far she has excellent house manners and is about as low maintenance as you can get. She doesn't bark unless she's excited about a squirrel or bunny that she's found in the fields at her foster home. She has a high prey drive instinctive to the breed. She loves hiking out in the woods but when she's home, she wants to be inside with her family. If you have a large fenced yard or country property, it would be heaven for Ladybug. She will not do well in a home that uses a tie-out or some other tethering system because she panics if she gets her legs/feet tangled up. She walks great on leash but will growl at other dogs along a trail or pathway that she encounters and because she also has a dominant personality, Ladybug prefers to be the only dog in the house. Ladybug wags her tail all the time and wiggles happily in your presence. We don't think she knows just how strong she is so if your home has kids, older children would be better. When we spayed Ladybug, we also tested for heartworms which disappointingly came back positive. Luckily we were able to find a clinic with immeticide and she has completed her heartworm treatment and now is ready to find her forever home. (Less)

When we arrive she has TWO shepherdy puppies and there was Ice missing fur and areas of bright red skin. Going over Ice's records we see that this person had only had her a few months. The demodex must have been brought on by loosing the only home she had known since puppy hood. She is now settled in here and healing nicely. She is a really sweet girl and didn't deserve this. Shepherds are so very devoted to their humans that loosing them can be devastating. We are so glad she made it here.We will send this girl out with a box of Revolution which is the best product for mange so that you can continue her care until she is completely healed and settled into a new, wonderful, life. This mange is not contagious to humans and not usually contagious to healthy, un-stressed, adult dogs. She was good with the children in this last home. (Less)

Love My Colors? Honey was born about November 23, 2009 or January 14 2010 or January 1, 2012! OK, so usually we appreciate when there is previous vet work that comes with dogs, but this time it's a messy hodge podge of information with 3 different birth dates! I'm going with the oldest date just because I'd rather have an adopter find out a dog is younger than we said rather than older. Honey weighs about 75 lbs. It seems her life started in a humane society in LA and they adopted her to someone in MS then she ended up back in the shelter so Scottsville Veterinary Hospital who also brings dogs from the south for adoption brought her up. ... (Read More)They adopted her out and she wasn't good with the 3 year old, but Scottsville refused to take her back because they were too full and so she came here. WHEW!!! So, the owners with the 3 year old dropped her off saying she'd like a quieter environment without a child 'hanging from her neck'. Well, wouldn't we all? No wonder she didn't care for the child. Over all she has a very nice disposition and is good with other dogs. We are told she is not good with cats. She does ok on leash and knows what a gentle leader is. She is good in the house and in the car. And she was fine with the 10 plus age children in the home. There is documentation that she tested positive for heart worm last year, was treated, and has again tested negative so she is good to go on that subject. This big girl doesn't know her size and would like to be a lap dog, she adores her humans it's too bad she has been thrown away so much. Oh, well, she holds no grudges and we hope to find the perfect home for her this time where she will be a valued member of someone's home. Here is a bit about her from a volunteer that adores Honey. 'She is very easy going, Friendly with people and other dogs and she takes treat gently. When she lays down she likes her tummy scratched. She pulls on the leash at first but walks good after a while.' (Less)

I'm such a handsome boy! My owners love me, but they are ill and can no longer care for me. I need a FOSTER OR FOREVER HOME up north so I can be back inside a safe and warm home - right now I'm living outside. My name is Buddy, and I'm a 7 year old Golden/Shepherd mix who weighs 69lbs. I've got a ton of love to offer one lucky family! I get along wonderfully with dogs of all ages and sizes, and I'm also great with children. I've been with my furry sibling Daisy (a beautiful black la mix who is also 7 years old) my entire life. If we could be adopted together, we'd be in heaven. If not, I at least must have another friendly dog in the home ... (Read More)to keep me company. I may be 7 years old, but I still love to play and I have a lot of fun energy, so I do need a securely fenced yard where I can play safely! I sometimes limp due to a broken foot from years back, but it doesn't affect my ability to run and play. I'm neutered, microchipped, and vaccinated. My adoption fee is $375. (Less)

I'm From Tony's Ballesteros Transport! The Ballesteros transport is sponsored in memory of Tony D'Angelo, a Joyful Rescues adopter that passed away unexpectedly in the summer of '14. Tony loved the good work done by all the people at Joyful Rescues and the idea that great dogs were being saved and being placed into wonderful homes. He also LOVED golfing. His favorite golfer was Ballesteros so this is the last name of the twelve lucky dogs that were saved by dedicated volunteers Susan and Eileen who made the trek and back to West Virginia in fifty five hectic hours. Champ was born about January 9, 2014 and may top out to about 65 ... (Read More)Pounds. He did well on his long ride here and is wonderful with the other dogs. He has been wonderful with all us humans and should do well in most any home. The dogs from these shelters come with no history so this is all we know for now and will be updating as we learn.     Wow, it's been quite a journey, but I'm finally safe! I was rescued from the Manhattan ACC before I was set to be euthanized. I was also suffering from a terrible infection on my back. After a lot of TLC, I'm as good as new, and now all I need is a forever home to make my life complete. My name is Maya, and I'm a 7 year old shepherd mix who weighs 50lbs, and I'm looking for a forever home that is as special as I am! My friends at GSAR say that I am truly one of the MOST affectionate and loving dogs they've have EVER met. (And since they're the dog meeting type of people, that's really saying a ton!) My amazing Long Island foster home has ... (Read More)two young kids, and I enjoy nothing more than to cuddle and play with them - as well as cover them in kisses. Lots and lots of kisses! Fair warning: My forever home must submit to frequent and extended belly rubs!!! I can also be a bit of a couch hog, but I'll happily move over as long as I can snuggle on your lap. I crave your love and attention, so I'd really love a home where I'm the only dog. I'm spayed, microchipped, and fully vaccinated. (Less)

German Shepherd Mix    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Mocha was born about October 2, 2009 and weighs about 80 lbs. She is wonderful with other dogs, house trained and good on leash. It seems she'd like a home with no kids or older kids judging from her intake papers from the shelter where she was dropped off. Since I had the previous owners phone number I called and the kids she grew up with her 8 & 10 and seems she was sometimes intolerant of them. Interesting, is that one of their friends (male) was a child she would bark and growl at which makes me wonder what that child did to her when no one was looking. So, just in case, we should not place her in a home unless the kids are teens. ... (Read More)I was told that she slept with cats and was wonderful with them. We've seen nothing but a really wonderful dog and so glad she made it here! She is people oriented and loves treats-a little greedy for them, actually. Must not have gotten many in her last home! She does well with other dogs and is kinda laid back. Her energy level is medium-like. She will like a more active family that will take her for walks and play outside. Mocha came to us with heartworm, but has been treated and should be re-tested in November/December. She will need to be kept on preventative, at least until the re-testing has been done. So, adoptions have been strong and we had room to rescue 29 dogs and 1 gorgeous cat from a high kill area. Not one complained about the long ride and all have settled in nicely. Many of them seem to have understood, right away, that they were now safe in our Dog House with fresh blankets, lots of Science Diet food, automatic waterers and even toys! It gets a little confusing when getting files ready for so many at once, so if a breed, size, age seems questionable with the photos shown, please let us know. We are doing the best we can to save as many as we can. We so appreciate your understanding and willingness to adopt a dog we know little about that would have been dead, within a few days, if they had not come here. (Less)
