German Shepherd Mix    Age: Young Puppy

Health: Needs to be Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Look at that sweet adorable face!! This is Zooey - a 10 week old (1/8/17) German Shepherd/Hound mix gal!! She's a feisty one - LOVES to play with other dogs and playing Tug is her specialty! Zooey is very much a typical puppy - she's carefree and loves to sleep in the sun, run and play, and of course - eat! She loves people but is so busy trying to figure everything out that she doesn't have the patience to snuggle for long! Rescue Me ID: 17-01-12-00053Aspen (male)

German Shepherd Mix    Age: Young Puppy

Health: Needs to be Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Aspen is one adorable bundle of short pudgy sweetness! He is about 9 weeks old (1/7/17) and will most likely weigh around 40-50 pounds as an adult. Our best guess as to breed is a mix of German Shepherd and Basset Hound. When Aspen talks to his people, he throws a little hound bay in there every once in a while! He currently weighs around 8 pounds. Aspen is currently piddle-pad trained and sleeps in his crate at night. He really is a typical pup - he loves to run and play - and eat too! Rescue Me ID: 16-12-10-00106Daisy (female)

German Shepherd Mix    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Very Submissive
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current, Fearful/Anxious

We adopted this German shepherd mix from the Wake County Animal Shelter in December 2011 when she was around 3 years old. Between work and our daughter's extracurricular activities we have found that we don't have the time to give her the attention she needs in terms of training, exercise and caring in general. Daisy is a sweet-tempered and smart dog with special needs so we are looking for someone who can be at home more often than us and has the time to work more closely with her. We would love to find her a home where she has room to run around outside but she is a climber so would need to be supervised outside or have something like a ... (Read More)vinyl fence that she could not climb. We are especially concerned about how she will react when our older dog passes as having another dog for company has a calming effect on her and we don't intend to get another dog. This is another reason why we are hoping to find someone who either can be at home more often or at least has another dog to keep her company. While she can be shy; she is generally good with other animals. More important things to know about Daisy: She has issues with separation anxiety and can be nervous around new adults, but once she gets used to people she loves to be close to them and loves to be petted. She loves other dogs and has never shown aggression towards dogs or children. She is currently taking Prozac for the anxiety which helps immensely and we have found that, even though it is not covered under insurance, the generic is pretty inexpensive. She is house-trained but occasionally has accidents if she gets stressed out or doesn't get to walk long enough. She is very particular about where she uses the bathroom outside and can take a while to find just the right spot. She has also been destructive from time to time when left home alone. She is current on all her shots, weighs about 70 lbs. and has a tracking chip. (Less)

Animal ID: 0047Roqui (male)

German Shepherd Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: High Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

MEET ROQUI This beyond adorable boy is a 1 year old black and tan German Shepherd mix that came to us from the Downey Shelter in CA. This guy is tall, lanky and lean and a ton of fun. Those ears give Roqui quite the unique look and we think it is adorable. Roqui gets along well with other dogs and just loves to play. We believe he would do well going to Doggy Day Care or a dog park because he hangs out with anywhere from 3-5 other dogs here at the rescue. He would do better with dogs that are closer to his size than with smaller dogs because as a young boy, his play style is rough and tumble. This youngster loves toys and bones but ... (Read More)doesn't like to share his bone. He will run, chase, wrestle and play tug with others. When he stands still for a minute, Roqui likes ear rubs and attention from his humans. Roqui would do well with a family that is active and looking for a companion who likes to hike, run and play. Roqui needs some work on his manners as he does jump up and is a bit mouthy, sometimes wanting to play by holding your hand in his mouth,n nothing a stable environment, time, attention and the proper training won't fix. We are working on manners to help him become the wonderful pup we know is there. Because of his lack of manners, young age and size, we would recommend a family with older children. A family that adopts him will be required to attend training classes for both his and their benefit. Roqui is UTD, microchipped, HW-, on flea/tick/HW preventative and neutered. Adoption Fee $350 If you are interested in adopting Roqui or any of the other JLGSR dogs, get the process started by filling out the online application at www.jettslegacy.com/adoption-application.html Note:. You must have an approved application on file prior to setting up a meet and greet. (Less)

Volunteer update 11/20: Baxter has been at the shelter since 11/3. That's a long time for a dog to stay at the shelter. He needs rescue or adoption NOW! We've had Baxter out of his kennel several times with other dogs. He always behaves nicely around other dogs on leash and no aggression has been noted. When in his kennel he does act out sometimes when other dogs are led past his kennel. You can see from the condition of his ears from fly bites that he has had a very rough life and received little to no care. Baxter would love to have another chance at life and have the opportunity to know what it is like to be loved and cared for. He needs ... German Shepherd    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Not Good w/ Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults

Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current, Hip Dysplasia

Hi, My name is Siri. I am about 2 years old. I am a very, very sweet girl. I am up to date on my vaccinations, I have been spayed, dewormed and microchipped. I am heart worm negative an i am on monthly heart worm, flea, tick, and intestinal worm preventatives. I am underweight (but gaining healthy weight with proper nutrition and supplements). I am very loving and really enjoy attention. I love to play and be with my humans all the time. I am considered a special needs girl because of my hip. My left hip only sits in the socket about 20% where it should be closer to 70%. The vet says that I will eventually need to have surgery as a ... (Read More)last resort BUT that surgery is not needed yet. I still run and jump and play like other dogs. You wouldn't know that I have hip issues without seeing my x rays. The rescue would like for me to gain up to a healthy (lean) weight of about 75 lbs. I have been through a lot in the last eight months and really just need a stable and predictable routine and environment. I do love all people, young and old alike. While I do get along with other dogs, especially medium to large sized dogs. I really love the water and would gladly take a swim every day if given the chance. I do need a home that is active and enjoys activities. I love playing with toys and I still think that I am a lap dog. I will nudge your hand and look up at you with my big eyes as if i were saying something like (I'm so sorry that your arm is broke - I know that's the only reason you are not petting on me) LOL. I enjoy riding in the car and going on outings. I am very clever. I will give anyone a kiss and allow petting, belly rubs, and pretty much anything as long as you are giving me attention. I love playing in the water. I am house trained and I am crate trained but will get very anxious if I am kept in it for too long ( I was kept in a crate for 3 months and kept in boarding for an additional 5 months). Despite this I don't mind a crate but I would really prefer to be with my family. As a previous Service Dog, I have fantastic personality. The Vet believes that the hip surgery will eventually be necessary but that could be years before its needed. I have never known anything else, did not know that my hip was a problem, You probably can't even notice it when you watch me walk and run. Eventually needing this type of surgery makes it unlikely that most people would consider me for adoption, perhaps not as a working dog again but I think we should wait and see how things look once I have had the chance to settle into a new forever home. I just need a home that can give me the time that I need to get back to a healthy weight, and get back on my feet. I have an amazing personality, temperament, and really wonderful disposition. These are things that cannot be purchased or trained, it just comes natural. The obedience training is going well. The rescue will be working on my training and it will continue when I am placed with my new family and my specialized training will be completed with For the Love of Dogs Rescue mentoring and training with my new family and handler. Right now I may look a little rough around the edges but it is our hope that you can see past the little things that are not so desirable. Do you have room in your heart and home for a beautiful girl like myself? Do you have a little patience to see me reach my full potential? I am very young and still very much puppy. I will play and keep you company all day long and be perfectly happy to keep your spot in the bed warm should you allow me to share the be with you. If you are interested in adoption, please contact Charlene with For the Love of Dogs Rescue and ask for an Adoption Application. Once your references are checked, a home visit will be scheduled and then a meet and greet can be scheduled. If all goes well then you would be able to sign the contract, pay my adoption fee and take me home that day. The rescue would schedule with you regular training sessions to keep my training ongoing to help increase my skill sets and refine my tasks. please call charlene at 704-464-9999 or email FTLOD@RoadRunner.com to get an adoption application. If you give me a chance to show you how loving and loyal I can be, you will not be disappointed. Are you the family I have been waiting for??? (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 16-09-11-00262Kira (female)

German Shepherd Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Very Submissive
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current, Fearful/Anxious

Kira is a 3 year old German Shepherd that needs a new home. She is current on all vaccinations and is spayed. She is quite petite at one 55#. The only reason why she needs is a home is due to the inner dog-aggression. She is shy and will take time to get to know you. She is not a lap dog but when she trust you she will come out and want you to love on her. She is crate trained and should be crated when not supervised because true to her GDS nature she is curious and will get into things. She loves to play with other dogs and so she will be a good doggy partner. She does prefer her doggie counterpart to humans as she was not properly ... (Read More)socialized as a puppy. Kira understands pack behavior and therefore I will ask that you either have another dog or be willing to work with her extensively. She is timid around people and new surroundings so a fenced in yard at least 6'' or leashed walks are a must. She is special needs. She requires pancreatic enzyme powder over her food twice a day to keep weight on her. This can be expensive (depending on where you purchase it) but she has to have this. This is a lifelong medical condition that can be easily treated. When loved properly she is a sweet, loyal companion and true to her German Shepherd nature.     MEET TED!! Goofy, silly, playful Ted is a 4 year old, male GSD that we got from the Downey Animal shelter in CA. We aren't sure what happened in his prior life but as a result he is rather shy when he first meets you but does warm up once he feels safe. He is a sweet and gentle young man that has a HUGE playful side. Ted is super playful and LOVES other dogs. He would do great with a family that has multiple dogs for him to play with. He minds his manners around the other dogs and is not too pushy when playing, though he will get as rough and tumble as he needs to. He is still very cautious around new situations but we are working on that. ... (Read More)Ted rides great in the car so we take him as many places as possible to help him understand that not all humans are bad. His shyness can put off people which is sad because he is very loving when given the chance to warm up. All he needs is someone to give him the chance to gain some confidence and be the wonderful dog he can be. Ted is UTD, microchipped, on flea/tick/HW preventative and neutered . Adoption Fee $400 If you are interested in TED or any of the other JLGSR dogs, please take a minute to fill out our online adoption application at www.jettslegacy.com/adoption-application.html.     Piper is your average GSD, save she was rescued from a Breeder, at which point she was malnourished and sickly thin. From the time I rescued her til now, she's grown quite a bit, and filled in rather nicely. At first, she was quiet but has gotten quite vocal and will certainly let you know what she thinks, perhaps take it as sass. But unfortunately, I am no longer able to take care of her in the proper way like she should be. I didn't want to take her to a shelter because she deserves more than that.     He's in need of a good home. We can only keep him tuntol the end of August. He's great outdoors. Listens to commands & doesn't stray. He likes being indoors. He does not like to be kept in a kennel or cage. We raised him as a pup for a year+ but then we unexpectedly had to move & couldn't keep him. We gave him to a 'friend' who lived on a farm. We visited him early on, and he seemed happy, even around other dogs & other animals. He lived there for about 2+ years. A couple of months ago we received a call from a shelter that he had been surrendered. (He has a chip with our contact info.) We've had him ever since. Not sure what he's been ... He occasionally snarls and growls at my 5-yr-old daughter and my 10-yr-old son. He even snapped at my daughter, slightly breaking the skin. My kids are a little fearful of him. Because of this, we can't possibly keep him. We really would like to find him a good home. He'd make a great watch dog & companion. Loves attention esp his belly rubbed, sleeping on the couch or bed, & loves running with you (on leash) while you ride a bike. (Less)

MEET CANELA!! Canela (which means Cinammon) is a 2 year old black and tan female German Shepherd that was dumped by her owners because she was 'too vocal'. Dogs left in the back yard with no attention tend to bark. Well, no more worries for this girl because with the help of the Miracle GSD Network we sprung her from the Downey Shelter in CA and brought her here to NC. Her Miracle number is #719 which means she will always be safe and loved. 'Nela is a smart, beautiful girl with a lot of energy. She can be a little unruly and will definitely benefit from basic training. However, since being here at the rescue, she has already learned ... (Read More)some manners. She is learning that in order to get what she wants she needs to behave and will now sit to go outside, for you to throw the ball or love on her and even to get her dinner. She does get very excited and does jump up on people and can even be a bit mouthy, however she does correct well and with continued direction and training will learn that behaviour like that is unacceptable. 'Nela is so beautiful that she feels she should be Queen of her own castle and would prefer to NOT share her home with other dogs or small animals. At this time we would suggest a home WITHOUT small children due to her need for additonal training. She should also go to a home that is experienced in German Shepherds. Canela is UTD, HW-, microchipped, spayed and on flea/tick/HW preventatives prior to adoption.     Hello potential adopters! My name is Sydney, I am a 4-5 year old Yellow Lab/Shepherd mix. I found myself at a high kill shelter with only hours left to live. I wagged my tail so hard at all the adopters going by, and finally... someone picked me! I was so excited! They took me to the vet for a few vaccines, and the vet told them I was heartworm positive. I don't know what that meant, but the family retracted on their offer to adopt me. Did I not wag my tail enough? Was I not pretty enough? I found myself on my way back to the shelter, back on the euthanasia list. I was so sad and confused. A very special technician at the veterinary hospital ... (Read More)decided to try and contact a few rescues before I went back to the shelter, and I got picked! They thought I was beautiful and worthy of saving. I have been so appreciative and excited every since! I am now getting the treatment I deserved for heartworms, and I am spayed, microchipped, and searching for my forever home! My forever family would need to foster me during my treatment, but my rescue will be paying for everything! I have gray on my muzzle from living a hard life, but the vet thinks I am no older than 4-5 years old, and other than the heartworms I am perfectly healthy! Could I be the sweet, laid back girl you've been looking for? I am crate trained, house trained, dog friendly, cat friendly, and people friendly. I love to hang out on the couch and watch movies, and I am good on a leash. Please email my rescue today if you might be interested in making me part of your family forever! (Less)

Andie ~Sponsored~Reduced Fee~'s Story...Andie is a sweet old lady that was pulled from Franklin County Animal Shelter just minutes before being put to sleep. Andie loves her person/people unconditionally and would love to go to a home with a single lady that is looking for a loving companion and a protector. Andie was severely abused and neglected so she needs to go to an understanding and patient home. Before she was rescued she lived outside so she gets overwhelmed easily in busy situations. She loves consistency and a steady routine. Once she sees you as her family she is a great guard dog and will protect you with her life. On the ... (Read More)flipside Sandy loves to cuddle and get loved on as much as possible!!! She can be fearful of men (especially if they have loud voices) and most children are just too active for her to relax around. For this reason she needs to go to a kid-free home. If you are looking for a sweet and protective couch potato this is your girl! Andie is dog and cat friendly and enjoys the company of others furry friends. She would be fine - maybe even prefer - being the only pet because that would mean more attention for her and she lovesssss attention! This girl still has a lot of spunk and lots of love to give! As previously mentioned Sandy would be a great fit for a single woman looking for a loyal companion and protector. She would also do well as a farm dog where she can enjoy a calm environment and hang outside for part of the day and head inside when she is ready to chill on the couch! She loves to chew toys and to cuddle with her person. When she first came to FCHS she didn't know what toys were for... She has come a long way but will always need a special home! Andie was heartworm positive when we rescued her but was able to go on a nice long road trip to Georgia to be treated thanks to a wonderful group who sponsored her! She has overcome various other health issues and we are so happy to be able to report that she now has a clean bill of health! Sandy is spayed, micro-chipped, up-to-date on vaccinations and current on heartworm and flea/tick prevention.     Twilight is a wonderful sweet little pup who has come a long way! We know Twilight's mom was German Shepard, but unsure of dad, and although she carries many wonderful German Shepard traits, her size is tiny! Maybe mixed with Shiba Inu?? She was brought to us at 10 weeks old with because some neighborhood boys had been teasing her with food, not getting her vet checked, and hanging her over tree branches by her leash and chocker collar. She was malnourished, starving, full of 3 different parasites, on a parvo quarantine, (she did not catch it yay!)and showed some aggression signs regarding food and children. Now at almost 6 months, she can ... (Read More)eat peacefully and respectfully as long as people or other dogs stay out of her bowl, she eats in kennel it's less stressful, and plays wonderfully with my 5 and 4 year old son and daughter. they had been afraid of her because she would chase and nip at them and now they can pick her up and take her on walks and play fetch without a problem! I worked with a behaviorist to make this all happen, and it worked! She is now getting spayed tomorrow, fully potty trained with limited supervision, off the leash trained and leash friendly as well. She gets along with all other dogs, but not cats as she will chase and bark! she is extremely intelligent and has a heck of a nose on her, typical of German Shepards! She has blossomed and become a really awesome dog! She NEEDS a fenced in back yard or a large piece of land to live on, because she does like to explore. She is a digger and escape artist! She loves the outdoors so somewhere she can go in and out of is ideal! But she will cuddle all night with you in bed! And when I say small, I mean she is barely 25lbs!     Cheyenne is no couch potato. For her, life is all about having a good time! She is never one to go into or out of the house without a toy in her mouth. Toys are Cheyenne's favorite thing. She can jump to amazing heights to expertly catch a ball. (click on her photo to see her in action) She is a one-dog entertainment center! Cheyenne is high energy on one hand, and sweet and loving on the other. She'd make a great running buddy and could excel in agility or other dog sports. Cheyenne loves to go for rides and enjoys the adventure of discovering new places. A fenced in yard is a must for this girl. Cheyenne would be best in a home where ... (Read More)there are no small children, as she is so lively. Cheyenne has many cat friends. She doesn't need another dog to be happy, but she would be fine in a home with other dogs, especially if they are on the calm side. Cheyenne is very smart, quick, and willing to please. She has the potential to be a superstar with a person willing to show her what to do. In fact, with proper training she has the potential to be a good therapy dog.
