She really wants to be your best friend. She has moderate energy and enjoys having a yard to romp in. She loves other dogs and would love to have a buddy to hang out with. She is fine with children too. She is up to date on shots and wormed. She is already spayed. She is being fostered in Ottawa ... (Read More)Lake, Michigan. The adoption fee is $100.     Hello everyone. Meet Bree. This beautiful Shepherd/Boxer mix will be 7yrs old in April. We got her from the Coshocton county animal shelter 7/31/2010. She is good with kids/people- very friendly and good with other animals. She will however chase things that are not supposed to be in our yard, such as deer, squirrels and cats. She knows her basic commands and loves to play with other dogs. We love Bree, but our home situation has changed. The kids have gone to live with their father, and I work very long hours. It's not fair to her that she isn't getting the attention she deserves. We hope we can find her a home with children, as she loved ... (Read More)being their nanny. She will make a wonderful addition to any home, though. We just want what's best for her. (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 16-11-30-00275Gemma (female)

German Shepherd Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Hi there. My name is Gemma. I'm about 2 years old and I weigh 50 lbs. I was left here at the pound in a kennel while they were closed so nobody really knows any background info on me or where I came from. I am a very sweet and affectionate girl. I LOVE people and I get along well with other dogs. I keep my kennel clean and I try my best to only go potty outside. If you're looking for a sweet dog to add to your family, please consider adopting me. Our adoption fee is $120.00. The adoption fee must be paid in CASH. We are unable to accept personal checks or credit/debit cards for adoption fees. ALL dogs/puppies adopted from our shelter will ... (Read More)receive their parvo distemper vaccine, bordetella vaccine, rabies vaccine (if aged at 12 weeks or older), be dewormed with a 3 day course of panacur dewormer, be microchipped, receive their current Ohio dog license and will be spayed or neutered. ALL DOGS/PUPPIES WILL BE SPAYED OR NEUTERED unless a health issue prohibits the surgery from being performed. Not all dogs posted for adoption are spayed/ neutered yet. If you're driving a long distance to adopt, please verify that the vetting process has been completed and dog you're interested in adopting is still available for adoption. The above mentioned vetting is all included in your adoption fee. The adoption fee and what is included in the adoption fee is NON-NEGOTIABLE. Adoptions MUST be done at the pound and in person as there is paperwork to fill out and an adoption contract that must be signed by the adopter. This means you must be willing to travel to our shelter to adopt. IF the dog you're interested in adopting has medical conditions or injuries which require medical treatment, we ask that you help with the medical bills so we can continue to help the dogs coming in who need additional vet care. We are a county run shelter, therefore we cannot control our intake or the health or behavior of the dogs that come in to our shelter. Although we try our hardest to place all of our adoptable dogs, there are certain circumstances in which any dog in our care could be euthanized at any time and without further notice (IE: sudden untreatable medical condition or injury, temperament or behavioral problems which may not be apparent when the dog first arrives, lack or space, etc.), therefore all dogs at our shelter should be considered urgent. The adoption of a more highly adoptable dog will mean more time for the less adoptable dog in the kennel next to him! Shelter hours are: Monday-Friday: 8 am- 4 pm Saturday: 9 am- 12 pm. The pound is CLOSED to the public on Sunday. There is nobody in the office on Saturday and Sunday, so therefore we are unable to answer or return phone calls over the weekend. Can't adopt a dog? We would love to have more volunteers who are able to spend time with our dogs! The dogs LOVE going for walks and the socialization and exercise helps make the dogs more adoptable. German Shepherd Mix    Age: Young Adult

Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Ginger is such a sweetheart. She loves to cuddle and will happily hang out in your lap. I am very loving, affectionate and attentive. I really like to play with tennis too! 54 lbs. 2 years old. If you have questions or would like to meet the dog featured on this page, please call (216) 664-3476 to speak to an adoption representative at CITY DOGS Cleveland. Or email citydogs@city.cleveland.oh.us About Our Shelter... CITY DOGS Cleveland is a program of Cleveland Animal Care & Control (CACC), located at 2690 W. 7th St. Cleveland, OH 44113. Public hours are Monday through Saturday from 10am-3pm, and Sunday 12-2pm. The CITY DOGS mission is to ... (Read More)increase adoptions from the City Kennel by changing the image of the pit bulls who make up the majority of the kennel population, by preparing all adoptable dogs in the kennel for lives in loving homes and by creating as many opportunities as possible for the public to meet and get to know our dogs for the terrific pets they are meant to be. Our Adoption Process... Here's a little about how things work: All of the CITY DOGS posted for adoption are available for direct adoption from the kennel, unless noted otherwise. A handful of dogs are only available for rescue pull, which can be for a variety of reasons. You can either stop in during our open hours to meet a dog, or set up a meet and greet with your dog, which allows us to get the dog out of his/her cage for some exercise before you arrive. To set up a meet and greet, please email us at citydogs@city.cleveland.oh.us. About Our Dogs: All available dogs have been assessed. This assessment is a snapshot of who the dog is at that given time. Our dogs are strays and we cannot make any guarantees with regard to behavior, temperament or health of any City Dog. We do not know what kind of home environment they were living in (i.e. with kids, other dogs or other cats), nor do we know if they are house trained. Everything we know about them is based on volunteer and staff observations. It is very hard to tell with certainty whether or not a dog will be good with kids, cats or another dog. If you have kids in the home or another dog, we do require that they be present for a meet and greet with the dog you are considering for adoption. Health/Vaccinations: Dogs that are adopted directly from the kennel need to go to your personal vet within a week or so of leaving the kennel. They do have their DHPP, Rabies and Bordetella vaccinations, are dewormed once and have a microchip. In addition, unfortunately many of the dogs do get kennel cough. This is not something that is contagious to people at all, but dogs that do have it will need to be on an antibiotic. (Less)

Hamilton loves his humans! He enjoys long walks, car rides, chewing on his bones, and chasing leaves. He isn't too sure about most dogs, but does get along fine with the miniature pinscher that lives with him. He is a little scared of cats, so he stays out of their way. He is house and crate trained and up to date on shots along with microchiped. He is approximately 2-3 years old and 50lbs. Even though Hamilton is good with children, he will be best with a family that has children 12 and up because of his size.     Hi there. My name is Ozzy. I'm about 5-7 years old and I weigh aout 60 lbs. I was found as a stray in the Wellsville area and I was picked up by the pound. I was in bad shape when I was picked up. I was much too thin, I had a lot of missing hair from a flea allergy and I had a pretty nasty looking raw lump on my tail. I was taken to the vet and had surgery to remove the nasty lump and to get my skin taken care of. I still have a ways to go, but I already feel SO much better. I am a really good boy! German Shepherd Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Ruger will be 1 year old on the 26 of October, he is about 35#, neutered, utd on vaccines, rabies, microchipped, crate trained, walks well on leash, HW negative, on Trifexis for HW/Flea/Ticks. He is GSD/Retriever mix on the smaller side. He is good with dogs and cats. A fenced yard is a must for Ruger. He was taken in as a pretty fearful boy who had lived outside with his mom and littermates with almost no human contact. He is shy at first but once he warms up to you, he is very affectionate. He sleeps with us all night and stays in bed. We do crate him when we are not home, no use letting him get into trouble. He has been left out a few ... (Read More)times on accident and didn't bother anything. We got him 3/20/16 he was adopted out on 7/15/2016 but returned on 8/19/2016 for bullying the other dog who was very submissive. He gets along well with all the dogs here at the Den, but they really don't let him take advantage of them. So he would need a confident dog friend, not a submissive one. Being young, he needs to learn he has boundaries. He did a foster to adopt 10/08/2016 for 4 days but wouldn't eat and was returned again. He just hasn't found that right fit yet. Adoption fee: $225 If you are interested in Ruger, please email us at duncansdendogrehab@yahoo.com for an application. We do No meet n greets without an application first. Thank You. (Less)

German Shepherd Mix    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current, Blind

Beautiful Leon....another sad story with this rescue. Leon is blind, and was left tied to a pole, in the hot sun with no food/water/protection until he was discovered several hours later. Our hearts hurt knowing what 'could' have happened to him. Thankfully, a shelter reached out to us as he was extremely depressed in the shelter, and we rescued him. This dog LOVES people, all people, kids to adults. One of the things we do with our rescues, is take them weekly to a nursing home here, to provide comfort to the residents, and Leon was a superstar. He has some quirks-he doesn't like to be hugged and will give off a low grumble, so for this ... (Read More)reason, adopters should not have young children. Even we forget sometimes since he's like a big old teddy bear. We also discovered when brushing him, his tail and his back end are off limits. Not sure why, but it got a reaction. Possibly, he's been beaten in this area and just reacts on instinct. Leon weighs nearly 100 lbs, and has never been leash trained, but we're working on that. But it does take some strength to walk him. He does have food/treat/personal space aggression with other animals, so he is best off as the only pet in your home. He is extremely smart, quickly learns his way around, walks slowly and carefully and learns his way quickly. We did have Leon evaluated by our rescue vet. He has mature cataracts in both eyes, so we are going to try and get this surgery preformed for him if possible. It is an over $6000 surgery, which we hope to get done pro bono by a benefactor or sponsor, or through some grants we've applied for. This could restore most of his sight. So, he is still up for adoption, with the understanding, that if we can get the surgery done, we will-most likely in the Columbus Oho area, so hopefully an adoptive home can be found nearer to this area. Leon is a great dog, loves people like no other, and needs a better home than the one that abandoned him. Indoor home only. (Less)

Cooper has been our family dog for 8 years. He is generally a great dog - but has always had a mean streak that comes out at other dogs every once in a while (maybe every other week)- especially around food or toys. We had twin baby boys and recently Cooper has attacked our other dogs, unprovoked ,right in front of our children. He has never actually hurt another dog but it is scary to watch. We believe a home with no animals or kids could be a nice home for an otherwise great dog. He is potty trained, crate trained, and we are sad to have to let him go. But we can't risk something happening to our kids if they somehow were in the middle ... (Read More)of these episodes. (Less)

Now they've turned in to very big girls! Unfortunately, I live in town and and don't have enough room for them to get the exercise they really need. I am also extremely worried about the little black lab that I also rescued because he is much smaller and I'm afraid he's going to be sesiously hurt or worse one of these days :( They love people and especially kids once they get to know someone, but would make great guard dogs. Animal ID: 16-05-07-00351HATTIE (female)

German Shepherd Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Very Submissive
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current, Heartworm Positive

HATTIE is a PERFECT dog. Adorable, happy, calm, docile and super loving 2 yr old chocolate Lab female whom we rescued from a very high kill pound. She was on the euthanasia list due to overcrowding and also being heartworm positive. Hattie is a very sweet, sociable gal with the right amount of 'silly', is gentle and eager to please, and would make an exceptionally great 'emotional therapy' dog. Hattie gets along with everyone, and wants to be everybody's pal. She was slight/early onset heartworm positive, and underwent the 'fast kill' treatment which the rescue provided, and is now ready to find her forever home! She spayed, current on ... (Read More)vaccinations, house-trained, crate-trained and on monthly heartworm preventative (which she will need to be e for the remainder of her natural life. She is listed still as heartworm postiive because for 6 months after the fast kill treatment, her blood work will still potentially register 'positive'). All of our rescued dogs have been on a nutritional regime which includes high quality food and supplements (ex., probiotics; vitamins, etc). This is done to bolster their immune systems and overall health; the result benefits their adoptive family with a pooch who has a lustrious coat, bright shiny eyes, and happy and healthy disposition. German Shepherd Mix    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs
Personality: Low Energy, Submissive
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Calling dog whisperers! This is the handsome Tieg. He is a brindle shepherd/husky/lab mix of about 7 years old. He came from another shelter which didn't want him because he was so scared, so we brought him to Second Chance to give him yet another chance. He must've had some terrible experiences before he was abandoned as he is absolutely petrified of people he doesn't know and it takes him a very long time to get to know you. He is, however, great with other dogs and seems to enjoy their company although he is not especially playful. Although he will be forever welcome at Second Chance, it's not possible to work with him to the degree he ... (Read More)needs and we would love for him to find a forever home. He will need to go to a home with another dog to give him some confidence and show him the ropes and, most importantly, needs a person with tremendous patience and experience working with traumatized dogs. If you meet those criteria, please consider Tieg, so that he can have the chance to learn to trust again. (Less)

Bear is a bit of a renegade. He is very scared of people. He has taken a liking to some of the volunteers at the shelter and once in a while will let them make over him and love on him. It will take a special person to adopt our bear-bear, but he does need a stable forever home so he doesn't have to be scared any more.

Rescue Me ID: 14-09-30-00469Nelson (male)

German Shepherd Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Not Good with Cats, Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: High Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Neutered

What Nelson needs is a little bit of everything, love, obedience, and freedom!!! But what he needs most is that special person. We need to get them together. He has an abundance of energy but he is still a youngster and sadly growing up in the shelter which is just not good. He needs a home where he will have his own person to work with him every day. He is super smart but the shelter does not have the staff to do this daily. He is overly playful and wants to put his mouth on your arm and hands but not to bite you. They are recommending a home with no children. Also not sure about other dogs. He can be picky about people also. ... (Read More)There has to be the perfect person for him somewhere!!! Nelson is very special to us here at the shelter. He's been here a very long time waiting for that special person to find him and accept him for who he is. If you have a fenced in yard and kiddie pool he will be extremely happy!!!! (Less)
