Rescue Me ID: 14-08-31-00522Duke (male)

German Shepherd Mix    Age: Young Puppy

Daisy, Duke, and Delilah were surrendered with their Mama to a high-kill shelter when they were just 8 weeks old. Their Mom, Sugar, is a white german shepherd. We are unsure what their dad was - Duke is black, and Daisy and Delilah are brindle with black. They have the head and body shape of a shepherd, and we anticipate they will get to be 50 pounds plus as adults. They are 11 weeks old as of 8/25/14 and will be available for adoption approximately 9/1/14. These guys are well-socialized and friendly puppies. They are in foster care with other dogs, cats, and children. We are accepting applications for all 3 puppies at ... Rescue Me ID: 14-08-31-00496Lee (male)

German Shepherd Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Not Good with Cats
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

We don't see these guys too often in Pennsylvania! Lee is a Carolina Dog mix (aka American Dingo mix) that came from a high-kill shelter. He is an energetic and playful boy and likely would do well in agility or obedience competitions! He is eager to please and loyal to his caretakers. Lee is sad right now. Unfortunately Lee was in a foster home with another male dog that was provoking him and a scuffle ensued. We are seeking an adoptive or foster home for Lee with either no dogs, or SUBMISSIVE dogs. He is NOT aggressive, but WILL hold his own! Lee is housebroken and walks well on a leash. We are getting him used to using a crate. We have ... (Read More)seen no aggression out of him at all. Lee does presently have heartworms, which is being treated at the rescue's expense. Lee displays no symptoms at all, and will lead a full and normal life once these annoying parasites have all been eradicated. Please don't let heartworms, a fully treatable thing, dissuade you from adopting Lee. * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * Interested in adopting? * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING GUIDELINES FULLY. German Shepherd    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: High Energy, Very Dominant
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current, Aggressive

Abe is the best, smartest dog that my family of 5 has ever owned in 25 years. My wife and three teenage daughters and I love Abe very much but he is the first German Shepherd we have owned, and he is totally unpredictable around strangers. He has a history of biting at a couple people, and showing dominant behaviour and barking at them as well. Typically, if the person shows no fear, then he backs off quickly and wants to play fetch. If the stranger shows fear, then he's extremely likely to be aggressive. In my opinion, he needs to go to a home that has very few visitors, and plenty of experience with German Shepards, with time to work with ... (Read More)him properly. Even though he's good with our daughters, I wouldn't want him placed in a new home with children. He's far too smart to chain to a tree as a protective dog. He's been trained, house broken, and lives to swim in our pond, chew on deer antlers, and chase rocks. He knows several commands such as sit, down, come, stay, bang, fetch, and leave it. The ONLY problem is Abe's aggression to strangers. If you have a history and knowledge of working with German Shepard dogs, and time to work with him, then Abe is for you. (Less)

German Shepherd Mix    Age: Puppy

Personality: High Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Radar is not a Happy Paws Happy Homes dog, but we are posting him for his current caretakers who need to find him a home. If you can help Radar, please contact us for an application. A home visit and $100 adoption donation apply. Hello, my name is Radar and I'm a male 1-year old German Shepherd/Labrador mix...but mostly Shepherd! I am completely house broken and will let you know if I need to go outside. I've had a rough start, having been to a second home in my short life, and when those owners decided they didn't want me. My foster moms rescued me so I could find a really good furever home. I'm super smart, although a bit stubborn, but I ... (Read More)love to please my human. The stubborn part probably comes from not being given any training at all in the past and not getting to socialize much. My foster moms have been teaching me how to walk properly on a leash, but I still like to pull and I'm super strong so you have to continue to work with me on that. They taught me to enjoy my crate and will go in with a treat...I'll even go in and lay down on my own with the door open just to take a nap. I really REALLY love kids and love to play with them but I play a bit rough so kids that are a little older would be best with me because I may knock down a toddler by mistake and hurt them. I show too much interest in cats, I like to chase them. I'm a dog! Speaking of dogs, I love playing with other dogs if they're almost as big or bigger than me. Did I mention that I like to play? I will MAKE you play with me, I'll throw my toys at you, and I'll jump on you...yes, I need to work on that too. I'm really agile so maybe I can learn to catch a frisbee! I'd love that almost as much as I love playing tug-of-war or chasing my ball! I do have a few quirks in that I'm a bit nervous around some people....not aggressive, but very apprehensive and I may back away and bark at them and try to hide behind someone to stare at them. I also LOVE my caregivers and get a little anxious when they go outside and will run window to window looking for them. When they come back inside, I act like they've been gone forever! My foster mom says I have a touch of separation anxiety. Given time and socialization I know I'll be able to overcome these quirks. I have lots of energy and love to run so my new family would need to have a fenced in yard so I can get lots of exercise. Did you see the ears on me? Nothing gets past me...I'm very alert and will warn you anytime anyone comes near the house or to the door. I fancy myself somewhat of an alarm system. Everyone needs one of those! I did mention that I'm very agile, so I would love to be with a family who has an active lifestyle. I'd be the perfect running or hiking partner and because I'm so smart it wouldn't take much to teach me how to be one of those super cool agility competing dogs! Not only am I a stunningly beautiful dog, but with some time and obedience training, you will have found an incredibly loyal and special dog! Please help me find a special home that wants to give me the time and love I deserve!     Boots is a purebred German Shepherd. His coat coloring is dark brown/black on most of his body except for his throat area into his mid section and his knees to his feet, which is a light brown/beige. He is about 33 inches tall from the floor to his to his head, and his weight is about 110-115 Pounds. His body length is about 35 inches from noes to rump. His tail is about 15 inches it's self, but I could be wrong about that from all the twirling and wagging he was doing when I was trying to measure him. He does seem to be getting lazier due to some pain in his hip area, which he nibbles at creating wounds which I continuously need to apply ... (Read More)with antibiotic to keep from infection. As for his temperament, he has typical traits that would be found the breed; Weary of strangers in what he considers 'his' area, although he will not bite unless a stranger or person that is not part of the family reaches to take his food or water bowl away, and even then it would be seldom because he is generally calm, relaxed. As for the nibbling on his wounds, he is not fussy when receiving medicine for his wounds unless it is a type that stings when applied, such as peroxide or alcohol, in which under such circumstance he will just run away and hide. If need be, I give him anxiety medicine or Benadryl to calm his nerves before applying those kinds, which I seldom need to. Hydrocortison spray for hot spots on dogs and neosporine seem to work just fine for the both of us. He will allow the application of those with the addition of some soothing sweet words spoken in a soft voice. Clipping his nails is easy, he stands there as if nothing were happening, but you may need to tell him to stay and hold his color to keep from him walking away. In the past, Strangers to him that he had just met less than an hour before they clipped his nails he made no fuss, and did not even flinch when she accidentally nipped his skin. When I do give him pain or anxiety pills, most of the time it is as easy as holding it in the palm of your hand, telling him treat, and if it drops from his mouth, point, pick it back up and say 'treat, eat it buddy, come on, eat the treat', And he will just eat them without having to make him. A house full of family members does not bother him, although rooms too crowded will cause him to cry and whine out loud, unless the crowd is the people he considers his pack. He will only cry if it is a crowd mixture of guests and family. Telling him to go lay down will work, unless he is that incredibly nervous. He is loving, snuggly, and once that bond is created with him, it sticks- nothing will break it. I can stick my hand into his food bowl, grab some food in the palm of my hand, and he will eat straight from it. He knows commands well, so don't let him play you for a fool. He knows. When people leave the home, he whines, and if there is no one home, he may howl. He adjusts incredibly quickly. Outside of the home, or 'area' he's very content with meeting new people, especially people that are considered friends to you. He does love people, although one out of ten times he may flinch when a stranger reaches the wrong way to pet him. He usually looks to the demeanor of his handler. In the home, however, he is wonderful with children as well as out of the home. I've come to see that he adjusts better around females, probably because of the intimidation that comes with a tall man with a deep voice. If that kind of man happens to be part of the family or 'pack', and is one of those who help take care of him, whether feeding, brushing, small walks, etc. He will nonetheless bond the same way. He has no aggression issues. He is a nervous dog at times, but I do believe in the circumstances going on in the situation through the past through months have been nerve racking for him. He will lay on you, In your arms, and will love with all of his heart. He does need a vet check up to have blood work done to see what types of meds he can be prescribed by the doctor instead of just over the counter remedies. He has a phenomenal intellect. You could probably have a whole conversation with him and he'd probably look at you as if to respond back. He is curious. He loves other dogs, and he is wonderful with children. His clumsy nature along with his sheer size may be an issue for small children due to his body length & clumsiness causing him to bump them on accident. As a senior dog, I don't recommend small children tugging at him or trying to initiate puppy-like play. The experiences I have had with him and toddlers/young kids have all been more than positive ones. I just never was in a situation with him where a child would poke and prod or tug at him, So I have no idea how tolerant he would be of that. I assume he wouldn't be fussy, He is a sweet hearted, loving animal who only dreams of a place where he is loved. Alas, If only I could keep him, it would be like old times, and we would be together, happy. (Less)

Blair's Info... I am already spayed, up to date with shots, and good with kids. Blair's Story... Blair was found at a school playing happily with the kids, and a kind neighbor brought her to the local shelter to keep her safe. She thought she had a potential adopter, but they never came back for her, so poor Blair spent the next two months there ... and with little hope of adoption at this overcrowded shelter, things weren't looking good :-( Luckily for Blair, one of our Almost Home fosters offered to take her in, and she is now doing great in her new foster home, where they say she's a very lovable, easy, low maintenance dog. She's about ... Channing does love to cuddle and will sit by your side all day. She also loves belly rubs and to give kisses. Channing is housebroken and will let you know when she has to go.     (Sir Van) Keillo is a soon to be three year old purebred German Shepherd. Unfortunately, he spent most of his life at the shelter. Sadly, a lot of owners get a German Shepherd without having taken the trouble to research the breed and find out what they're getting themselves into, which results in a lot of sad, mixed-up, abandoned, and often aggressive German Shepherds. Suspicion and wariness is a hardwired character trait in guard dogs like the German Shepherd and Keillo was not properly socialized. That is the bad news. The good news is older Shepherds can still be successfully trained, but it takes more time and effort to first 'untrain' ... (Read More)them of any undesirable habits already acquired. Keillo would make a wonderful companion and guard dog. As you can see from the pictures, he is handsome, obedient, and loyal. And all he asks for in return is exercise, leadership, training, and affection. Pretty fair trade if you ask me! Keillo's new guardian will need to spend several days, maybe weeks, working on gaining his trust by walking him and playing with him at the shelter. For this reason, no out of town inquiries please.
