Rescue Me ID: 14-12-15-00106GISELE (female)

German Shepherd Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

GISELE was saved from BARC Animal Shelter in Houston, TX. She was noted as an owner surrender, but no reason given. GISELE is very sweet and gentle, she is very loving and quite playful, she acts and looks younger than the 3 years that she has been aged at. GISELE is well mannered, although when she gets excited she does jump up a little. At the rescue I free-feed and she does growl a little at other dogs if any of them come near her whilst she is at the food bowl, but I would not consider her to be aggressive, but if other dogs are in the home, she might need to be observed initially during meal times. GISELE, as all rescue dogs would ... (Read More)benefit from some obedience training with her new family so that she can learn her boundaries and what is expected from her, and her new family can learn her body language and what makes her tick. GISELE has been aged at 3 years old (December 2011), she is spayed, rabies, up to date on her vaccines, de-wormed, tested negative for heartworm disease and is mirco-chipped. She currently weighs around 40 pounds and I believe this is her ideal weight. GISELE is available for adoption through Give a Dog a Home, German Shepherd Dog Rescue for an adoption fee of $170. We transport our dogs 'home' via Rescue Road Trips bi-monthy for a fee of $185. Our adoption process and online application can be found under the application tab. (Less)

This timid little girl is Prancer. And you would be timid too if you found yourself in a high kill shelter and your future unknown. Prancer is spayed, up to date on her vaccinations, and micro-chipped. She is currently in south Texas but we are looking for her safe home and loving family in the East. Rescue Me ID: 14-12-09-00410SPIKE (male)

German Shepherd    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Introducing SPIKE, a good looking 2 year old German Shepherd. SPIKE and his brother Rocky 's owner could no longer care for them so they were surrendered to the Houston Texas Humane Society. The owner said they were bought from a breeder but didn't have papers. There was a lot of interest in the boys from people wanting back yard/guard dogs. This is not acceptable so they contacted us here at Give a Dog a Home, German Shepherd Rescue (GaDaH). Like his brother, SPIKE is a lovely boy, he is affectionate, but it is clear it is not something he has been used to and was initially unsure when you went to stroke his head, he cowered a little. ... (Read More)But once scratching on his ears he is of course a happy boy. SPIKE and his brother Rocky are very bonded with Rocky being the alpha boy as it is with most big brothers. When the boys first arrived at the rescue SPIKE looked to Rocky for confidence. However, since he has settled in, he has found his own self-confidence. Both dogs are under-weight, with SPIKE needing to gain the most weight. SPIKE easily needs to gain the additional 30-40 pounds to be at his ideal weight. SPIKE needs an active family who can give him plenty of both physical and mental stimulation. He will benefit from lots of long walks, allowing him to smell and let his mind process everything. He will need a family that can be patient and let him learn to trust completely. SPIKE is neutered, rabies, up to date on vaccines, de-wormed, micro-chipped and tested NEGATIVE for heart-worm disease. SPIKE currently only weighs about 55 pounds. His given date of birth is 24 October 2012. GaDaH is hoping to adopt SPIKE and his brother Rocky together since they have clearly been partners through so much and have bonded. However, we will consider individual adopters to ensure they both get wonderful homes. We are looking for those loving families and forever homes in the Pacific Northwest. We use Rescue Road Trips to safely transport our dogs 'home'. Rescue Me ID: 14-12-09-00272Nora (female)

German Shepherd Mix    Age: Young Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: High Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Needs to be Spayed, Needs Vaccinations

Hello meet Nora. I was given Nora near the beginning of September as a gift. The person giving her to me had been told that she was a purebred German Shepherd and that she was old enough to leave her mother. She was precious, but only six weeks old. It soon became apparent in her appearance that there was a hound on the farm that she came from. She is a mixed breed and the vet thinks Black and Tan Coonhound. Her and size at this age are more like a Tree walker Hound. My husband is the obvious Alpha family member and she does try to boss my around at intervals, yet I'm the one that she curls up with at night. All vaccinations have been done ... (Read More)except Rabies and Kennel Cough if you want that one. She has been eating Fromm Puppy Food, available at Pet Ridge Dog Market. Nora ia having to spend too much time in the kennel due to work schedules and my husband's Cervical spine injuries we are not able to keep Nora. We live in a townhouse with a small back yard, not enough space or time for her to burn up that energy. She loves her toys, running and digging. It is dangerous for her to dig here because all wiring is not very deep underground and I don't want her to get electrocuted. Nora knows the basic commands, come, sit and down. She is treat trained. Loves to snuggle once that energy is worked out of her. Someone please give us a call. I can text some pictures of her. I could not figure out the photo feature on this site. We need a new home quickly. There will not be a fee since she still needs her rabies shot. Her toys and beds will come with her. I just want a great, safe place for her to grow up and learn the rest of her manners. She would be a great search dog. Fantastic sense of smell and loves to run and dig. If you can not reach me please call my husband @804-332-7654 (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 14-12-07-00608STARLA (female)

German Shepherd    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Most Cats
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

STARLA was saved from San Antonio Animal Care Services literally an hour before they was going to kill her. They had labelled her as having distemper due to her walking funny and 'fly biting'. When I got there to pick her up it was clear to me that she had been injured in her hips or back legs and would need x-rays and surgery. I researched the fly-biting and this could be due to trauma, a bad habit (like dogs chasing their tails) or a mild form of epilepsy. STARLA was taken to the vets and x-rays showed she had both of her hips were dislocated and her pelvis was broken. She had surgery which entailed her hips being 'toggled' back into the ... (Read More)sockets to hopefully stop them keep falling out and had plates on her pelvis. STARLA is an amazing girl and was walking around within days. It has been several months since she had the surgery and she has been fantastic, no problems at all; she gets around as if nothing had happened. STARLA is however, extremely thin, this is due to her being so starved and her stomach having shrunk so much, it will take a long time for her to gain the weight and get to how she should be. Nonetheless she eats well, she is on joint supplements and immune support supplements, she gets on great with all the dogs and doesn't even mind small puppies climbing all over her. STARLA is extremely affectionate she will follow me around and when I am sat down she has to be lying as close as physically possible and if she is able she will either lean, or have some part of her body touching my foot/leg. She can get vocal if she is in the way and other dogs are trying to get past her, but that just adds to her personality. STARLA still does the 'fly-biting' and it really is unknown what it truly is and what caused it. We have tried her on anti-seizure medications and they didn't do anything to help this, other than make her very docile from the drugs. So, she has not had any medications and although the fly biting can be regular or sparse it doesn't seem to worry her at all. She loves to cuddle on the bed and just be wherever I am. She will do well with a family that wants a velco-dog, one that has got so much love to give and will always be by your side. All she wants in return is love and caring, she enjoys car rides and is very friendly with people and children. She has not been round cats since we don't have them at the rescue, however, I am not sure if she would care about them. If she did I don't think it would be difficult thing to get her out of, but that would depend on the family and how much time they had to put into working with her. STARLA loves to go on walks and of course until she has gained her full weight the distance should be gradual and at her own pace. STARLA is spayed, rabies, up to date on vaccines, de-wormed, heart-worm tested Negative and micro-chipped. STARLA is available for adoption through Give a Dog a Home, German Shepherd Dog rescue. We are located in Devine, south of San Antonio, in the high kill state of Texas. Our adoption fee is $170. We do offer our dogs for adoption to safe and loving families that live along the East and West Coasts. We use professional transportation companies to ensure their safe arrival. Rescue Me ID: 14-12-07-00398BECKY (female)

German Shepherd Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs
Personality: High Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

This stunning young beauty is BECKY. She was adopted from a high kill shelter in Texas to what she thought would be her forever home. Sadly, they did not give her a chance and she was returned to once again be on death row. We here at Give a Dog a Home, German Shepherd Dog Rescue, saved her and brought her into our pack. Becky is extremely active, LOVES her toys, LOVES to run and play chase. Just like young children, she can get vocal when she plays and gets excited. Becky is responsive to commands. Although we have not done any formal training with her, she will be very easy to train. Becky would suit an active family who have the ... (Read More)time and willingness to give her the mental and physical exercise that she needs to keep her busy and out of mischief. Becky is great with kids, as long as they respect her boundaries and understand that dogs too need time to be left alone. We do not have cats in rescue so we cannot say how she is with cats. However, she is still relatively young and could be taught to leave them alone, if she did have that 'interest'. Becky has an estimated birth date around February 2nd,2013. She is spayed, rabies, current on her vaccines, tested NEGATIVE for heart-worm disease, de-wormed and micro-chipped Becky is available for adoption through Give a Dog a Home, German Shepherd Dog rescue. Rescue Me ID: 14-11-23-00479OWEN (male)

German Shepherd    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

OWEN is a handsome, sweet, gentle White German Shepherd Dog. He was found as a stray in the Poteet area of Texas. Taken to the vets and posted on lost and found sites, no microchip, no owners. So OWEN came to GaDaH. Owen was walking funny and had ear problems so I took him to the vets - he had bad yeast ear infection, which has been treated and cleared up. He also walked funny, which we thought was a problem with his paws but under examination it was deemed more of a neurological problem called 'over-stepping' which is where he cannot always associate how far the ground is away and so he over exaggerates his walk. This causes him ... (Read More)absolutely NO problem at all. OWEN runs and plays as well as all the other dogs, he just looks a little goofy in doing so. OWEN absolutely LOVES the water, he is so much fun to watch as his movements are over-exaggerated. OWEN is very affectionate and loving and would suit a family that had a big yard where he could run and play - a kiddie pool in the warm weather is a MUST as this gives him so much pleasure, so a family that can live with a dog that likes to get wet :) Due to his issue, OWEN obviously won't be a good candidate for a running companion and walking at a human pace could cause him discomfort, so OWEN would be best with a big back yard and rides to some great spots where he can explore and venture in new environments. OWEN does walk on the leash and is fine on short distances, but he does pull so would need some training and guidance. OWEN lives here at the rescue with all the other dogs and gets on with them great, he loves chasing the puppies and of course jumping and splashing in the kiddie pool. We do free feed here at the rescue and OWEN can be a bit grumpy when eating in that he will growl at the other dogs. Some dogs will walk away and come back when he has gone, other dogs just ignore him. He has never done anything other than vocal and I believe that is just from being a stray and having to fend for himself. He has never been aggressive at any time. OWEN has been estimated at 3~4 years old, he is neutered, rabies, core vaccines, de-wormed and tested heart-worm negative. The video posted was taken in June and shows OWEN with a lot of the rescue dogs. Some of these dogs have since been adopted, but it will give you an idea of OWEN's love of water and his gait. You can adopt Owen and give him a loving home in time for the holidays! We use Rescue Road Trips to bring our great dogs from the rescue in south Texas to loving adopters up north. Go to www.giveadogahome-sanantonio.org to complete an adoption application. Transport space fills up quickly, so don't wait. Owen would like some really good treats in his Christmas stocking, but most of all, he'd love his very own fur-ever home! Adoption fee includes transport cost. (Less)

BELLE, is very affectionate, sweet and loving young girl with a very gentle laid back temperament. Of course she loves to play and run around, but generally she is just happy to be close by and when she looks at you she looks directly into your soul. BELLE's mother was a pure bred German Shepherd and her puppies (born Dec. 2012) contracted distemper. All the pups were given the distemper serum and antibiotics and did very well. BELLE had neurological complications that were caught early on and she had surgery that was 100% successful. Belle has NO neurological side effects of distemper! However this did cause Belle to loose most of her ... (Read More)teeth. This does not hinder her in anyway at all. She happily eats with all the other dogs, takes treats and bones too. German Shepherd Mix    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Harley was only 8 months old when we pulled him from a local animal control because they couldn't find a home for him. His mom was a purebred German Shepherd who was left outside and wasn't spayed and had a litter of pups. He was the last one so they tossed him! Harley was adopted from Rainbow Animal Rescue in 2006. His new parents were in the military and moved to Florida a few years later. Harley loved his little brother, Pike, who only weighed 15 lbs. and they both loved the water and were the constant companions of their parents. About a year ago they had a baby which took up more of their time. Pike was rehomed last year because he ... (Read More)growled at the baby and Harley developed a phobia to loud noises, especially thunder and fireworks. His mom reported that he is still just as sweet as when they adopted him in 2006 and still loves the water. He gets along well with kids and other dogs. They tried to introduce him to the neighbor's cat, but the cat ran and hid. Harley just cocked his head and sat there. Unfortunately, they need to rehome Harley and called Rainbow, as required in the adoption contract. A VERY dedicated volunteer was in Texas visiting when we received the call to rehome him and she drove by Jacksonville, Fla. from Texas on her way home to get him! So, once again Harley is looking for his forever home. He was rescued at 6 months; he wasn't socialized as a pup so he needs a home with NO KIDS. He loves to run, play fetch & get love! He is crate trained and knows basic commands. He needs to be walked several times a day or go to a home with land or a large fenced yard- he is a husky and needs plenty of excercise. He should not be left alone with other dogs as he will pick a fight over water, food, etc. He currently gets crated when home alone & loves his crate aka his 'man-cave.'
