Picture this: I was running around Texas just free as a bird and I got caught and put in this super noisy, big kennel place. I heard someone call it a kill shelter, but I'm not sure what that's about. All I know is I've been traveling a while now, arrived in the state of Virginia, and it was so great to get out and stretch my ... (Read More)legs. Speaking of, I heard one of the ladies who met me say my legs go on for days. Hey girls, that's a good thing! Now I'm at a smaller kennel place getting neutered...ummm, what? They said I'm heartworm positive too, but my foster mom is going to get me started on my treatment and I'll be good as new in no time. I haven't gotten a chance to meet my foster mom yet (the ladies said she was going to take good care of me), so I'll get back to y'all with an update as soon as I'm settled in! (Read More)New People: Friendly 4/Dear Miss Kathy, I am writing to tell you of the recent horrible events befalling me. After many long months of neglect, my family has thrown me out. I had so many flea bites that all my beautiful hair fell out. I didn't know what I would do! Thankfully a distant cousin invited me to stay in the country with her until I regain my health. Once I'm healed I will be looking for a new home. Please keep me in mind if you hear of any families looking for a friendly, sweet girl. Yours truly, Abby A note from Abby's cousin . . . Abby is a 5 - 6 years old GSD Mix. She is unsprayed and currently about 60 lbs. She will be spayed prior to adoption. She is being treated for severe flea dermatitis and an ear infection. She needs to gain some weight. Abby came from a very bad situation. She is very shy and tentative, but friendly once she gets to know you. She is house trained but does not appear to have had any other training. She walks on leash without pulling. I recommend basic obedience training once settled into her new home. Abby has been friendly with my GSD. She has a very high prey drive and cannot be with cats or small animals. Pending further evaluation, I recommend caution with small dogs. I have discovered that Abby like to tear up cardboard boxes. She likes her Kongs stuffed with peanut butter and treats, and she likes to chew hooves. Abby will be taking some quiet time to rest and recuperate. Once her lovely personality shines through, I will update on what type of home would be best for her. 5/15/18 - An update from Abby's cousin, Abby is looking and feeling much better. Her hair is growing in and her skin is healing. She will continue to get 3 to 4 medicated baths per week until her skin is completely healed. Abby's vaccines are now up to date and she has been microchipped, she will be spayed as soon as she puts on a little more weight. Abby is very friendly and craves the love and attention that she has likely never had. She is slowly getting familiar with her foster siblings and likes to go out in the yard with them. However, she becomes reactive when other dogs get near her crate, food or toys so requires supervision. We will begin working on resource guarding, it is likely her new family will need to continue working on this issue over time. Abby is learning basic commands, she is food motivated and eager to please. Stay tuned for more updates!     Meet FAITH! If you are looking for a great all-around dog, this is your girl. She has gone through a lot! When she came to us she had three mammary tumors which have been removed. Of course she wasn't spayed either. That has been done as well. Faith is estimated to be between 5 and 8 years of age but acts much younger. She has plenty of energy to go for walks but is not hyper. She is affectionate and likes to give kisses. Housebroken. Good on leash. Knows some commands. Ok with other dogs but probably not with cats. Message PAWS of SWVA if interested in this beautiful girl.

Animal ID: 0472April (female)

German Shepherd    Age: Adult

Status: Available for Adoption (adoption info) Adoption Fee: 250.00 Species: Dog Rescue ID: 0472 General Color: Black with Tan, Yellow or Fawn Current Size: 60 Pounds Current Age: 7 Years 8 Months (best estimate) Location: Round Hill VA 20141 Housetrained: Yes Exercise Needs: Moderate Reaction to New People: Cautious Michelle Burnett Albanese April 30 at 1:09pm April --- A Friend for all Seasons April is a beautifully sweet and faithful companion. Her foster family adores her describing her as 'tender and loving' but she deserves to find a forever home. April is looking for a loving family who wants their dog to be their best friend and ... (Read More)constant companion. April would be a great addition to a calmer, more laid-back home and family environment where she can have lots of companionship and love. She literally leans into her loved ones and often rests her chin on an arm or leg waiting for rubs. April sits by her foster mum's feet while she is working on the computer, and she follows them through the house. She responds positively to your encouragement, is happy, loving and adores attention. We're not sure of her age, and like any sweet lady over 4 or 5, she's keeping her true age a secret. With all the pros of a young dog--energy and spring to her step, loves being walked several times a day-she also has the pros of an older dog--wise and calm and intuitive. Simply put, she's the perfect mixture of young and old, and she could be your new companion. April enjoys the comfort and security of a covered crate for napping and sleeping. She enjoys being outside and meeting other dogs and people and loves going for rides in the car. April knows the command 'sit' and she shakes and gives high fives. She loves to be the center of attention and will stick close by. The areas you get to work with her on: some mild refreshing of her obedience and leash skills and a little reminder about inside barking when she notices dogs or horses outside and wants to meet them. When April is left alone, she cries a little, but quickly lays down and rests. April is heartworm positive, but this has not been a negative for the foster family as April is full of energy and all heart. April must have had tough seasons in her past and yet she is loving, gentle, easy to correct, loves people and is great with older children. April is your dog for Spring. She's your friend for more than a season but for a lifetime of companionship. Wouldn't you love to meet a new friend? April is heartworm positive and will be treated by Shenandoah Shepherd Rescue. If she is adopted before she has finished treatment, SSR will continue paying for her heartworm care. If you are an approved adopter and are interested in April, please let your case worker know. When he was younger, his first family accidently hit him with their car. Both of his back legs were broken. Being unable to afford the medical care and deal with the recovery period, they took him to an animal shelter and ... (Read More)the shelter called us. We agreed to take him into the SSR family. Leo is such a sweet, happy, and laid-back boy. This guy isn't letting anything slow him down! He has made huge strides in his recovery over the last several weeks and will continue to improve with time. He is still walking with a limp, but we believe with time he should recover beautifully. Leo loves playtime with his doggie friends and would thrive in a home with other dogs around. He has also discovered the beauty of chewy toys, things that crinkle, and bones. Belly rubs are nirvana for this young guy! He does good around dog savy kids and is working on learning his cat manners. Leo is learning some basic commands and does well walking on a leash. Leo is house trained and will signal you with a whine that he needs to go out. He is crate trained and will go in his crate on his own when he wants quiet time. Animal ID: 0176Kona (female)

German Shepherd    Age: Young Adult

Status: Available for Adoption (adoption info) Species: Dog Rescue ID: 0176 General Color: Black with Tan, Yellow or Fawn Current Size: 51 Pounds Current Age: 5 Years 2 Months (best estimate) Location: Glouchester VA 23061 Housetrained: Yes Exercise Needs: Moderate Reaction to New People: Cautious Kona is a sweet petite German Shepherd. She needs time to warm up to you, and the perfect adopter would provide the patience and training needed to help Kona come out of her shell. A home where someone is around most of the time would be ideal and help Kona with socialization. Kona enjoys walks, car rides, ball playing inside and outside, and ... (Read More)she adores running around in the fenced yard. She loves playing with her toys that dispense treats. She likes to sleep on the bed with her foster, and she will lounge in a chair or sofa if allowed. Kona is potty trained and will alert you by pawing your leg or pawing at the door. She walks well on a leash, and she will sit and shake. While she won't jump into the bathtub, Kona is calm, and lets you give her a bath. The current foster does not crate Kona. However, she did use a crate previously, but Kona proved to be so trustworthy, it was not needed. Due to Kona's sensitive nature, she is best suited for a home with a calm atmosphere. Kona prefers to be the only dog, and she can be territorial around other dogs. She has shown too much interest in cats to live with them. Also, a home without young children would be best. It isn't that Kona doesn't like children, but their quick nature tends to startle her sometimes. Kona needs training, a stable calm environment, and patience to help her be the best dog she can be. Animal ID: 0521Rocky (male)

German Shepherd    Age: Senior

Status: Available for Adoption (adoption info) Adoption Fee: 250.00 Species: Dog Rescue ID: 0521 General Color: Black with Tan, Yellow or Fawn Color: Bicolor Eye Color: Brown Ear Type: Erect Tail Type: Long Current Size: 75 Pounds Potential Size: 90 Pounds Current Age: 10 Years (best estimate) Location: Frederick MD 21701 Microchipped: Yes Housetrained: Yes Obedience Training Needed: Needs Training Exercise Needs: Low Grooming Needs: Moderate Shedding Amount: Moderate Owner Experience Needed: Breed Reaction to New People: Friendly Life has not been kind to this old soul. In fact, it has been quite, well'|rocky. Rocky came into the ... (Read More)rescue; the scars of his past written upon his face and body. He was a tattered, broken soul with little to look forward to. Years of being uncared for left him ill groomed. He developed heartworms and skin infections because his prior owners did not invest in proper preventative medications. As his condition grew worse, he began to lose his once beautiful coat. When his beauty faded, his family abandoned him to a shelter; requesting he be euthanized because he had become too 'old.' No one wanted him. No one loved him. Shenandoah Rescue hopes to change that. Rocky most likely had to compete with other dogs for food. His face and neck show evidence of past trauma consistent with a dog fight. As a result, he is very nervous around other dogs. I have been working with him to improve his perception of other dogs but I feel he would be happiest in a home all to himself. At the beginning of his stay here, he showed some protection of his food, but has since relaxed and now takes treats nicely from my hand. He walks very nicely on leash, and is beginning to learn basic commands (come, heel, sit, place). He really enjoys training and will blossom under the guidance of a good leader. He often acts like a big puppy and will gleefully gallop to you for some affectionate petting. He has taken to my 11 year old son and may do well with older but respectful dog savvy children. We have learned that he travels well in the car. He is good in the bath and sits very patiently while he is all lathered up! He is very calm and well mannered in the house. Rocky's spirit is slowly beginning to shine again and so is his coat. All of us here at Shenandoah Shepherd Rescue are hoping his future will begin to shine just a little bit brighter too. If you are looking for a sweet ol' man to spend your days with, this is your guy! Will you give him a chance for a better life? I don't like to call him disabled, I just say that he is abled differently. Iver was born with Spina bifida. Most people don't know that dogs can have this. Spina bifida is a deformation in the spine that causes the spinal cord to be compromised. It comes in different severities, from mild to severe. The location ... (Read More)of Iver's deformity causes him to not be able to use his back legs. He is also incontinent and that will never change. His foster times his potty breaks to coincide with meals and is also training him with diapers. That being said Iver is a strong, smart puppy who doesn't let this get him down. He can scoot all the way outside by himself and he loves riding in his wagon. He will not be a pocket puppy that can be carried around, he is a GSD, so that means that someone will have to be strong enough to help him the rest of his life. He needs a home with no stairs, at least right now, he is not strong enough to pull his entire body up them. He needs someone that is not gone for a long day. He needs someone that can financially take on a special needs pup. Right now, he is 'mouthy', and his foster is working to correct this. Until this is stopped, Iver would not be a match for small children. We are currently having him fitted for a doggie wheelchair and we are beginning water therapy to increase his strength soon. This guy is crate trained and loves his peanut butter Kongs! This amazing boy has survived Distemper, and that is an absolute miracle! His battle has left him with neurological damage that makes him unable to balance himself to stand. We are currently taking him to physical therapy twice a week and are hopefully that he may regain some of his abilities. ... (Read More)Combined with the PT, his foster is working at home with him to increase his strength. Champ does have a set of quad wheels on order that should go a long way in helping him get around. Champ is able to go potty by himself outside, even though he cannot stand. He has figured out that he can urinate by laying on his side. Since he cannot run and play but still needs to get rid of excess energy, his foster gives him mind toys to keep him from getting bored. As of right now Champ should be the only pet. Not because he doesn't like them it is just the opposite, he gets so excited that he tries to stand to play with them and he just flops to the ground and could easily get hurt. Older kids would be ok but they would need to understand that he has different needs and precautions of any other dog. We know Champ is not your average dog, just as we know there is someone with room in their heart for this special guy. We would love to talk with you more about adopting Champ today! Luckily, he's young and strong willed. He's wanting to walk and play. He likes to be around his humans and follows them everywhere. While recovering, he takes sleep breaks on his dog bed or in his crate, and he loves to lay in the sunshine. Leo is a calm dog. Once he recovers and feels better we believe he will be even more active and social. He's being picky with his food, and he also guards his food and areas that he thinks are his. We believe this will change once he realizes he is safe and no one will bother or take his food. We will provide updates as there are changes.     Peaches is amazing! She affectionate, loves to cuddle and loves having her chest scratched between her arms. She enjoys stretching out for a good car ride. She loves to play with toys and will play by herself but would very much enjoy someone to play with her. She is a little bit of a couch potato but also enjoys walks and playing outside with her people. Peaches loves children of any age. She knows all the basic commands and is expanding on her training each day! Peaches is a larger GSD, ... (Read More)she is tall and weighs around 85 pounds now, she was only 36 pounds when the rescue took her in. Peaches prefers to be the only animal in the house. She does have a prey drive and will chase bunnies and squirrels if not corrected. She does not get along with other dogs at first, she takes a long time to warm up to them. Her fosters have her in weekly training sessions to help socialize her and teach her that other dogs will not harm her. Peaches is currently in a board and train program at Creature Comfort Inn Strasburg, VA. The training is extensive and she is making great progress with her dog reactiveness. Professional Training follow ups will be required to be continued with Peaches to continue to help her with other dogs. She has made great progress and has potential for so much more! Be sure to look at her videos to see her progress after only few weeks of training. Peaches has EPI short for Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency which just means her pancreas doesn't produce enough enzymes to break down the food properly. The enzyme powder that is added to her food at each meal costs roughly $39 per month. Her B12 supplement is $8 per month and her food is around $60 dollars per month. So please don't let EPI scare you. It is very basic and easy to manage. Peaches is doing so well and is very healthy. Won't you please apply to adopt me or request to meet me? German Shepherd Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Most Cats
Personality: Average Energy, Submissive
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Miss Adaline May (Addie) is the sweetest, most loving girl. She's a bit of a tomboy; happiest when she's in the backyard or wrestling with a foster brother. She's truly easy to please and probably the happiest she's ever been in her life. She wants nothing more than to make her people happy; she's just not always sure how to go about doing that, a little positive reinforcement goes a long way. Addie is crate trained, but is prone to a little anxiety over being confined.. She's much happier if she's just left to sleep on the couch or even in the crate if the door is left open. She has learned most of her basic commands and is in the process ... (Read More)of being leashed trained. She does pretty good but will still pull if she sees something exciting. Addie was probably left outside to her own devices in her previous life. She can be protective of the yard and her people. No aggression, she will just bark incessantly at strangers or even men that she knows. Sometimes she will hide under the deck if she knows a man well but his presence still makes her nervous. Her thunder jacket or a sweater help calm her some and she does much better inside when meeting new people or being around men. When she first came to us she tried to horde and hide food and treats. She seems to have overcome this for the most part but may revert in a new environment. We have had very little issue with her begging and she sits and waits patiently for her food bowl and doesn't start eating until given the 'go ahead.' She never fails to come give you love and kisses to say 'Thank you' for a meal. Addie can be anxious and scared but she has never showed any aggression whatsoever. Addie would probably do best with another older dog that could show her the ropes or in a household where someone was home most of the day. She would not do well anywhere she was expected to spend long periods kenneled. Anyone who has the great pleasure of making Miss Adaline a family member will find that she really is a special girl and they will be lucky to have her. *** visit www.promisesanimalrescue.org if interested in more pics and info for adoption **** (Less)

German Shepherd Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Cats, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: High Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered

My name is Rex and I am a chained dog. Yep, it's every bit as bad as it sounds. Look into my soulful eyes and you can see how I dream to be part of a family like the little dogs who live at my house. You see, when I was a puppy, I lived inside, but as I grew, my caregiver decided to make me an 'outside dog.' I didn't want to be an 'outside dog,' but now, for my 3 years of living, that is the life I have led. I am an optimist, and I have made the most of my life, giving kisses to those who visit me. I waggle and show them what a good boy I can be if only I can move into a home with a family. I dream of that every minute of every day. ... (Read More)THAT DAY HAS ARRIVED. My friends at Radford Pound Pals now have 'ownership' of me and are looking for my perfect new home! They are seeking an experienced dog family who can be patient with me. I want to learn and I want to please, but I may not understand all of the rules at first. See, there are no rules on the chain except surviving. My special friend next door loves me and works on training me every day and brags on how smart I am. She thinks I am a Shepherd/Lab mix and also tells me how handsome I am. I am also neutered, current on vaccines and HW/Lyme negative. Please, if you are interested in me joining your family, write my friends at pals@psknet.com for an application. (Less)
