I was adopted 5 and a half years ago and was predicted to be between 1 and 2 years old at that time. I have been the best girl ever and my mommy is very sad to rehome me but due to recently separating feels it is in my best interest. My mommy spends 11 hours away during the week and as I get older, she understands that is just too long. She also travels for work and although I do well boarded, it is no secret how much I miss being home. I have lived with cats and dogs (big and small) and do extremely well with both. They keep me on my paws and I enjoy it. I have also lived with newborns to teens and love all kids. I currently live ... (Read More)with a toddler and mommy can not keep her off of me. I do have minor hip displasia but that does not stop me from running and playing. My mommy tries to limit my trips up and down steps but I go where she goes. I do like to let people know that I'm there when I first get outside but quiet down quickly. I am up to date with all my vaccinations and have been well cared for. I want to someone to love me as much as my mommy does. (Less)

German Shepherd Mix    Age: Young Adult

He's a well mixed shepherd stray out of South Carolina. The shelter he was in thought so highly of this boy that they had kept him since last November and even found the money to treat his heartworms. That was just a couple weeks ago so he's still in the stage where he needs to be kept quiet. His shyness may work in his favor right now. He's content in his crate most of the time, but he's gradually becoming more comfortable around here and his inquisitive nature is beginning to show. He's been fine with all the dogs but I've been keeping Scarlett with him a lot because she's relatively new too and I thought she'd clue him in on our operation ... (Read More)around here. Yesterday he followed her upstairs to my office and he set about exploring the second floor of the house. He marks a little bit (he's not yet neutered), but only on places that other dogs have marked before him. If I get him directly outdoors when he comes out of his crate he immediately does his business so we really haven't had any problems. Although he's shy, he wants human contact, you can see it in his eyes and it doesn't take too much to win him over. As soon as he trusts you at all, he turns his back to you for a butt scratch, it's his favorite form of contact. (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 15-04-14-00070Elsa (female)

German Shepherd Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs
Personality: Average Energy, Submissive
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Meet Elsa! she is a 7-8 month old beautiful white shepherd mix that came to us from a horrible situation. Elsa and her two siblings were left on their own to fend for themselves from the beginning, starved and neglected with little to no human contact and then dumped in a high kill rural shelter in the south. What little human contact they did have doesn't seem to have been pleasant so understandably, it has been a very slow process trying to re-gain their trust and help them feel secure. Because they all still have fear issues, we do consider them **Special Needs** and they will need very special homes. It took a lot of patience, time and ... (Read More)love for them to open up in their foster home but the more they felt safe and secure with their surroundings, the more they started to open up and act like puppies. Elsa's siblings have both recently found their forever homes and now it is Elsa's turn. Elsa has such a sweet nature and she loves playing with other animals, even the dog savvy cat is one of her pals! Even though these puppies seem like happy, playful, silly pups in their foster home, a place where they feel comfortable, they are still very fearful of the outside world. A new person, different places, car rides, even being on a leash is scary for them. Their foster mom is working with them to try and build confidence but with fearful puppies you cannot push them. They have to do things in their own time and require very positive training techniques. We have found that there are some things that really help them with the adjustment period and therefore we would like to have these things present in any potential home. A relaxed home with a fenced in yard is a must. While they do not really enjoy walking around on a leash, they absolutely love playing in the yard. They play with toys, they chase balls, they really like running around in a place that feels secure. Having another established, outgoing, friendly dog already in the home also works wonders. Even though they are fearful, the have always gotten along well with other animals and are submissive in nature. They will follow the other dog's lead so having a confident role model in the home really helps bring out their true personalities and helps them settle faster into a new home environment. Elsa's family will need extra patience and time to work with her and help build confidence. Her forever family needs to understand and accept that she may always have some fearful tendencies and prefer to be a 'homebody'. If you think you may have room in your heart and home for this very special little girl please contact us to arrange a meet! (Less)

German Shepherd Mix    Age: Young Adult

Personality: High Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Unfortunately, Hodge found himself in a high-kill rural SC shelter. He did not understand why his family had not come to take him home. Luckily, DDB was able to bring him to the DC metro area so he can move on to a better life. Hodge is a sweet, friendly dog. He is about 2 years old and weighs 50 lbs. Since Hodge is a high energy guy, he needs to find an active person or family with whom he could go on long hikes and runs. He is working on a refresher course in house manners, leash walking, and basic obedience. His ideal home would be one where he gets lots of daily exercise and love. Could you give Hodge a forever home so he can get ... (Read More)the second chance he needs? In return, you will have a sweet, loyal companion for years. If you are interested in adopting Hodge, please go to http://adopt.ddbnova.org. Complete the dog adoption questionnaire and e-mail it to maritae@rocketmail.com. (Less)
